Gateway Grizzlies News Release
The Washington Wild Things avoided the sweep Sunday afternoon, defeating the Gateway Grizzlies 5-1, one day after the Grizzlies secured the West Division title, and a spot in the playoffs.
The Grizzlies (55-26) finished 4-2 on the six-game home stand.
The Grizzlies took an early 1-0 lead with some "small ball." Jeff Vincent led off the first with an infield hit. Ryan Saltzgaber sacrificed Vincent to second, before the outfield stole third base. He scored on a ground out by Dustin Roberts.
Washington (46-35) tied it with a homer in the fourth. The Wild Things took the lead with a run in the sixth off Grizzlies' starter Erik Dessau (12-2). Dessau took the loss, despite a good start. He allowed two runs on six hits. He struck out six.
Washington added three in the top of the ninth off reliever Brandon Kellbach.
The Grizzlies hit the road for a six-game road trip through Western Pennsylvania. The Grizzlies begin a three-game series at Slippery Rock Monday night. Game time is 6:05 p.m. central time.
