Gateway Grizzlies News Release
Sauget, IL - The Gateway Grizzlies scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and received a quality start from J.P. Williams on the mound, powering their way to a 5-1 victory over the Evansville Otters on Saturday night at GCS Credit Union Ballpark.
After a scoreless first inning, Evansville got the scoring started in the top of the second inning when Zach Biermann hit a solo home run to make it 1-0 Otters. That was all Williams (2-1) would allow in six innings of work for the Grizzlies, striking out six to hold the visitors at bay.
The Otters' lead would stand until the bottom of the fifth inning. Jose Rosario led off the inning with a single and stole second base, and later scored on a passed ball to make it 1-1. Later in the frame, Andrew Penner drove in a run when he reached first base on an error by Evansville shortstop George Callil, giving Gateway their first lead of the series at 2-1. Two batters later, with two men on base, Isaac Benard singled up the middle, with the ball going under the glove of Otters' center fielder Miles Gordon for a three-base error, giving the Grizzlies a 5-1 lead after Benard circled the bases.
The Grizzlies' bullpen would then close the door on any Evansville offense late, as Carson Cupo, John Murphy, and Reed Hayes combined to retire all nine batters they faced with five strikeouts, securing the victory.
The Grizzlies will now go for the series win against the Otters to conclude the homestand on Sunday night, June 5th at 5:45 p.m., with Brendan Feldmann taking the mound for Gateway against Austin Gossmann for Evansville.
