Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
HAGERSTOWN, Md. -- The Delmarva Shorebirds rode an impressive pitching performance from Matthew Grimes and Garrett Cortright for a 3-1 victory on Sunday afternoon. Delmarva (9-9, 42-44) concluded their longest road trip of the year with back-to-back wins over the Hagerstown Suns.
Matthew Grimes dominated the day in the start for Delmarva. The right-hander went a career-high seven innings, while allowing just one run on four hits. On two separate occasions, Grimes induced double play grounders to erase leadoff walks to protect the lead in a low-scoring affair.
The Shorebirds took an early lead, just enough run support with Grimes dealing. In the second, Delmarva loaded the bases with two singles and a walk. Guillermo Salas ripped a two-run single through the hole at shortstop for a 2-0 lead.
Hagerstown's only run came in the fifth off Grimes. Matt Reistetter led off the frame with a double, and Austin Davidson punched a two-out RBI single to cut the Shorebirds' lead to 2-1.
Delmarva added a key insurance run in the seventh inning. After Phildrick Llewellyn drew a walk and a bunt single by Ademar Rifaela, T.J. Olesczuk belted a ground-rule double to right field for a 3-1 cushion.
Garrett Cortright relieved Grimes in the eighth inning and picked up right where the Shorebirds' stater left off. Cortright allowed a single to Davidson, but then promptly induced an inning-ending double play grounder. In the ninth, Cortright struck out two batters in a perfect frame.
Grimes added to his team-best win total, now seven victories on the season. Cortright earned his eighth save of the year, while Suns' starter Drew Van Orden settled for a loss.
Delmarva will travel back to Salisbury and return to action on Tuesday after an off-day. The Shorebirds start a seven-game homestand with three games against the Lexington Legends. Left-hander John Means (5-6, 4.16) will start the series opener for Delmarva. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium in Salisbury, Md.
