Grand Rapids, MI - The Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League on Friday signed defenseman Sheldon Brookbank to a professional tryout and forward Tim Skarperud to an amateur tryout.
The 6'2", 200-pound Brookbank, younger brother of Griffins defenseman Wade Brookbank, has appeared in 62 games with the Mississippi Sea Wolves of the East Coast Hockey League, recording eight goals, 21 assists and 137 penalty minutes during his first professional season.
Last season, the 21-year-old native of Lanigan, Saskatchewan, completed his junior career with the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League's Humboldt Broncos. He was selected as the league's Defenseman of the Year after posting 14 goals and 35 assists in 59 games.
Wade and Sheldon become the third pair of brothers to play for the Griffins simultaneously. Todd and Jeff Nelson skated for Grand Rapids during its inaugural 1996-97 season, while Kevin and Kelly Miller played together during the 1999-2000 campaign.
Skarperud, 24, recently completed his junior season at the University of North Dakota, where he totaled 20 goals and 24 assists in 35 games. He placed among the Western Collegiate Hockey Association's leaders with 18 goals (T2nd), 19 assists (T7th) and 37 points (4th) in 28 conference games. Both Brookbank and Skarperud will be available tonight when the Griffins battle the Manitoba Moose in an 8:30 p.m. start at the Winnipeg Arena.
