Grand Rapids Griffins News Release
Grand Rapids, Mich. - The Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League on Wednesday re-signed center Hugo Boisvert (BWAH-vehr). A key member of Griffins teams that have captured consecutive AHL division titles, the 27-year-old Boisvert is coming off his most prolific season as a professional. He appeared in 78 games for Grand Rapids last season and tied for seventh on the club with a career-high 31 points (18-13-31). Boisvert's 18 goals during the regular season stood fifth on the Griffins and surpassed the total of his first two pro seasons combined, while his five playoff tallies ranked second on the team.
Boisvert, who is known primarily for his defensive and faceoff skills, has played in all but eight of Grand Rapids' regular season and playoff games over the last two years. He already places tenth on the Griffins' all-time list with 152 regular season games played, accumulating 60 points (29-31-60) in the process.
A native of St. Eustache, Quebec, Boisvert was a rookie on the 2000-01 Orlando Solar Bears squad that captured the International Hockey League's final Turner Cup championship. He also spent one season (1999-00) with the Canadian National Team after signing with the Atlanta Thrashers as a free agent on July 5, 1999.
Boisvert enjoyed a brilliant collegiate career at Ohio State. In 1998, he became the first hockey player and just the third sophomore ever to be named OSU's Male Athlete of the Year, after leading the Buckeyes to their first NCAA Frozen Four appearance and garnering First Team All-American honors. As a junior in 1998-99, Boisvert was a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award and a Second Team All-American, notching 51 points (24-27-51) to earn a spot on the CCHA First All-Star Team for the second consecutive year.
