August 13, 2008 - United League Baseball (ULB)
Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release
Harlingen, TX - Harlingen WhiteWings catcher Kevin Griffin is the 2008 team's Most Valuable Player as voted on by the fans at whitewingsbaseball.com.
Griffin will be presented with the award during the final home game of the season tomorrow night. The gates open at 6:05 p.m. and first pitch is scheduled for 7:05. Admission is free for both that game and tonight's game, which starts at the same time.
The 26-year old was among the league leaders in hitting during the first-half of the season, even flirting with .400 in the early going before settling for a .354 first-half mark, ninth in the league. He was on-base 49.1% of the time while leading the team with 14 doubles and two triples. Griffin led the team with 33 runs scored and 12 stolen bases despite starting all but four games behind the plate.
Griffin has played in 77 games this season, hitting a team-high .319 with three home runs and 35 RBI. He leads the team with 21 doubles and is tied for second on the team with 53 runs scored. He is second on the team in stolen bases with 15 and is third on the team in walks with 26. Griffin is also tied for the team lead with four triples. Griffin leads the team with a .398 on-base percentage and is second on the team with a .446 slugging percentage.
The Roanoke, Virginia, natvie was named to his third consecutive All-Star team this year, one of only two WhiteWings representatives. The game was played in San Angelo, where Griffin started his United League career in 2006. Appropriately, San Angelo is the opponent on Thursday.
Griffin is in his fourth season of professional baseball after winning the batting title at Ferrum College with a .346 average during his senior season. Former Major Leaguer Eric Owens, who hit .264 in nine Major League seasons (1995-2003), also went to Ferrum.
The switch-hitter joined the WhiteWings for 19 games at the end of the 2006 season and has been in a Harlingen uniform ever since.
