Coyotes' Streak Snapped at Eight

August 13, 2008 - United League Baseball (ULB) - Edinburg Roadrunners News Release

LAREDO, Texas- The day after clinching a playoff spot the Edinburg Coyotes' winning streak was stopped at eight games after a 4-3 loss to the Laredo Broncos Wednesday night at Veterans Field.

Miguel Martinez received the loss after he pitched six innings and gave up four runs on seven hits. Martinez struggled with his command as he walked six hitters in his six innings of work. The Broncos (38-48) got off to a good start in the bottom of the first inning when Anthony Bennett started the inning with a single to right field. After two walks by Martinez, which loaded the bases, Arnoldo Ponce hit a two run single that scored Bennett and Matt Imwalle which gave the Broncos a 2-0 lead.

But the Coyotes (41-41) cut the lead in half when Argelis Nunez hit his 13th home run of the season to left field. The solo blast made the score 2-1 in favor of the Broncos.

In the bottom of the third inning, Ivan Reyes reached on an error by third baseman Mayobanex Santana. Ponce then hit a two run home run, his eighth of the season, which extended the Broncos lead to 4-1. But Amado German cut the lead in half, once again, in the top of the fifth inning with his fourth home run of the season. German hit the 1-1 pitch over the left field wall which made the score 4-2. In the top of the seventh inning, German made the score 4-3 with his second opposite field home run of the game.

The Coyotes had a chance to keep their eight game winning streak alive in the top of the ninth but with a runner in scoring position, Gary Roche grounded out to third to end the ball game.

The Coyotes and Broncos will play for the final time this season as they wrap up their three games series Thursday night at Veterans Field. Aaron Guerra (9-2) looks for his 10th win of the year as he will match up against ULB Pitcher of the Year Santos Hernandez (7-6).
