Colts Rally Late and Escape with Win Against WhiteWings

Harlingen, TX - Down 7-1 after six, the San Angelo Colts (52-29) scored five in the seventh and three in the eighth before holding off a ninth inning Harlingen WhiteWings rally (20-62) to win 9-8 tonight at Harlingen Field.

The WhiteWings are now losers of six-straight while the Colts are winners of four-straight.

The Colts hit around in the seventh to score five runs. Charley Belew started with a ground-rule double and Tyron Pendergrass walked to knock out Miguel Sosa. Justin Staatz came in an issued a seven-pitch walk to John Anderson. Jose Torres followed with an infield RBI-single and stole second. Andres Rodriguez then hit a sacrifice fly. With two outs, Jason Landreth hit a two-run single and Bryan Frichter hit an RBI-triple to bring the Colts within 7-6, but Bobby Darling (1-7) got Wyn Diggs to groundout to end the threat.

With one out in the eighth, though, Pendergrass singled. Anderson then singled, moving Pendergrass to third. Anderson stole second and Torres hit a two-run go-ahead single. After Torres stole second, Rodriguez capped the inning with an RBI-single to make it 9-7.

Luke Massetti recorded his fifth save in a turbulent ninth. Hendricks led off the inning by reaching on an error and Greg Sillivent pinch-ran. One out later, Joel Gonzalez reached on a fielder's choice. Kevin Griffin followed with a deep drive down the left field line that hit off the top of the wall for an RBI-double to make it 9-8. Matt Lawman struck out on three pitches to end it.

That made a winner of Alex Merricks (4-1), who struck out the side in a scoreless seventh.

The WhiteWings got on the board against Brian Henschel in the third. With one out, Lawman walked and David Fowler was hit by a pitch. A ground out moved up the runners. Ryan Fox followed with a two-run single to make it 2-0.

Carl Johnson led off the fourth with a single and moved to second on a ground out. One out later, Lawman hit an RBI-single to make it 3-0.

Amadeo Zazueta led off the fifth with his fifth home run of the season. Fox was hit by a pitch and David Cardona singled. Trey Hendricks followed with a sacrifice bunt. Johnson hit an RBI-ground out to score Fox and move Cardona to third. After Gonzalez was hit by a pitch, Griffin hit an RBI-single to make it 6-0.

Sosa took a shutout into the sixth, but Rodriguez reached on a two-base throwing error, allowing him to score an unearned run on a two-out RBI-single by Landreth, making it 6-1.

Sosa ended up going six innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits while walking three and striking out two.

The WhiteWings took that run right back in the bottom of the inning though. With one out, Zazueta reached on an error and moved to second on a Fox infield single. Cardona followed by reaching on a fielder's choice, moving Zazueta to third. Trey Hendricks then reached on an error, allowing Zazueta to score, making it 7-1.

The WhiteWings and Colts play for the final time this season tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. It will be the WhiteWings' final home game of the season and admission is free for all fans. Right-hander Alex Gett (3-8) will face left-hander Logan Williamson (11-4).
