Grieb Named Co-Offensive Player of the Month

SAN JOSE, Calif. (June 6, 2002) – San Jose SaberCats' quarterback Mark Grieb, the field general of the Arena Football League's most potent offense, was today named Co-Offensive Player of the Month by the AFL office.

Grieb, a five-year AFL veteran, led the SaberCats to four consecutive wins in May by completing nearly 68 percent of his pass attempts (76-of-112) for 948 yards and 23 touchdowns. San Jose won its four games during the month by an average of almost 24 points per game.

The former UC Davis star currently leads the AFL in pass efficiency with a rating of 132.2 and touchdown passes with 43. He also ranks third in both passing yards per game and total offense.

San Jose boasts the top offensive unit in the league averaging 66.7 points per game and 311 yards of total offense per contest. With their 78-44 win over Los Angeles on May 11 followed by consecutive 77 point games in wins at Orlando on May 17 and against Dallas on May 25, the SaberCats became the first team in league history to score 77 or more points in three straight game s.

Grand Rapids Rampage OS Steve Smith, who recorded 43 receptions, 531 yards, 16 TDs, and four MVP of the Game awards during the month of May, was the co-recipient of the award along with Grieb.

The SaberCats put their undefeated record on the line this week when they travel to Los Angeles for a battle with division rival the Avengers on Saturday, June 8. The game will be shown live in the Bay Area on WB20. San Jose returns home the following week when it hosts the Chicago Rush on Saturday, June 15.
