June 6, 2002 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Los Angeles Avengers News Release
LOS ANGELES -- The Arena Football League announced today that Chad Dukes of the Los Angeles Avengers has been selected as the "Ironman of the Month" for his outstanding performances during the month of May.
Dukes, a 6-foot-1, 225-pound fullback-linebacker has been a force in all three phases of the game this season. In four games during the month of May, he rushed for 79 yards and five touchdowns, and caught four passes for 51 yards. On the defensive side, Dukes made 15.5 tackles, recovered two fumbles and forced a fumble. While playing on special teams, he returned seven kickoffs for 155 yards, including a 56-yard return for a touchdown against the San Jose SaberCats on May 11.
This marks the second time this season that Dukes has been honored by the AFL. Last week, he was named the "Ironman of the Week" for his dominating performance in a victory over the Georgia Force. In that game on May 24, Dukes scored three touchdowns, rushed for 19 yards, caught a 24-yard pass, returned a kickoff 12 yards, made a game-high 8.5 tackles, recovered a fumble and forced a fumble.
Dukes has rushed for 99 yards this season, ranking him at No. 2 on the league's chart.
This is the second time this season that a member of the Avengers has been honored with a monthly AFL honor. Offensive specialist Chris Jackson was named the "Offensive Player of the Month" after having a pair of outstanding games in April.
Avenger players have also fared well this season in terms of weekly league awards, winning five of the 21 handed out so far this season. In addition to Dukes' "Ironman of the Week" award, wide receiver-linebacker Greg Hopkins won his second "Ironman" award on Tuesday (June 4) and Jackson has already been selected as "Offensive Player of the Week" two times. No other team in the league has had its players win more than twice in 2002.
The Avengers (4-3) host the San Jose SaberCats (7-0) on Saturday, June 8, at STAPLES Center. The game kicks off at 7:30 p.m. and 5,000 fans will receive a "Greg Hopkins Bobblehead" doll, compliments of Carl's Jr.
Avenger season tickets are still available and can be purchased over the telephone at 1-888-AVENGERS. Single-game tickets, which start as low as $8, can be purchased at all Ticketmaster outlets and the STAPLES Center box office.
