Grand Rapids Rampage News Release

Grand Rapids, MI - The Arena Football League announced today that Grand Rapids Rampage offensive specialist Steve Smith has been selected as the AFL's Co-Offensive Player of the Month for his performance during the month of May.

Smith (5-8, 183, Utah State), who shared monthly honors with San Jose quarterback Mark Grieb, caught 52 passes for 648 yards and a Rampage record 20 touchdowns during the month. In last week's 71-53 victory at Arizona, Smith had his five consecutive game with three touchdowns or more. He also added 117 yards on nine catches. This award marks the first time that the second-year player has been honored by the league.

At the midway point of the 2002 season, Smith has 59 catches for 668 yards and 21 touchdowns. He currently ranks among the league leaders in receptions (T-1st), receiving yards (4th), receiving TDs (1st) and total points (2nd). The former Utah State standout is also on pace to shatter the Rampage's single-season touchdown record of 37, which is held by Thomas Bailey (1999). He currently sits fourth all-time, and needs only three touchdowns to pass Terrill Shaw (23) for second place.

Grand Rapids, who sits atop the AFL's Central Division with a 5-2 record, finishes out their two-game road swing against the New Jersey Gladiators (4-3) this Saturday night. Kickoff at Continental Airlines Arena in East Rutherford, New Jersey is at 7:30 p.m. The game can be seen live on WXSP-TV and heard live on WBBL 1340 AM.
