Greyhounds' Sergey Tolchinsky Named Pioneer Energy OHL Player of the Week
February 16, 2015 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL) News Release
Toronto, ON - The Ontario Hockey League today announced that Carolina Hurricanes prospect Sergey Tolchinsky of the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds is the Pioneer Energy OHL Player of the Week for the week ending February 15 after scoring three goals and five assists for eight points in three games with a plus-minus rating of plus-5.
Tolchinsky helped the Greyhounds win all three games last week becoming the first Western Conference club to clinch a playoff berth. Last Wednesday night on home ice he scored twice including the game-winner and added an assist earning first star honours in a 5-2 win over the Sarnia Sting. The Greyhounds then embarked on a two-game U.S road trip beginning Friday with a 7-1 win over the Saginaw Spirit where Tolchinsky picked up an assist, followed by a 5-0 victory over the Plymouth Whalers on Saturday where he claimed first star honours with a season-high four points including the game-winning goal and three assists.
Tolchinsky, a 20-year-old from Moscow, Russia, is playing in his third OHL season with the Greyhounds. After being undrafted in the 2013 NHL Draft, Tolchinsky signed a free agent entry-level contract with the Hurricanes. The 2015 IIHF World Junior silver medalist is currently 12th in league scoring with 70 points in 47 games including 23 goals and 47 assists while recording just six penalty minutes to date.
Also considered for the award this week was New Jersey Devils prospect Joseph Blandisi of the Barrie Colts who scored four goals and four assists for eight points in three games, and top NHL Draft prospect Connor McDavid of the Erie Otters who scored four goals and three assists for seven points in three games. In goal, New York Rangers prospect Brandon Halverson of the Greyhounds went 3-0-0-0 with a shutout victory posting a goals-against-average of 1.00 and save percentage of .965.
