Greenville Drive News Release

Greenville, SC - Kevin Guyette (5-2) pitched a season-high 6.0 innings and catcher Mitch Stachowsky hit a third-inning grand slam for his first home run of the season to help propel the Greenville Drive to a 10-2 victory Wednesday afternoon at West End Field. The win improved the Drive to a season-best five games over .500 at 32-27.

The RiverDogs struck first in the top of the second to give themselves their only lead of the game at 1-0. With two outs Eduardo Nunez walked and advanced to third on Tim Battle's single to left. J.T. Lafountain followed with RBI single to center, scoring Nunez.

The Drive would answer right back by scoring nine runs over the second, third, and fourth innings. In the bottom of the second Chris Turner delivered a leadoff single off RiverDogs starter Garrett Patterson (0-2). Two batters later Matt Mercurio hit his second home run of the season, a two-run shot to left.

Greenville would plate five runs in the bottom of the third on just two hits. Jay Johnson led off with a double and Dominic Ramos followed by laying down a sacrifice bunt. However, a throwing error to third on Patterson allowed Johnson to score and Ramos to move up to second. Patterson then issued back-to-back walks to Mark Wagner and Tony Granadillo before Mitch Stachowsky hit a towering shot to right center for a grand slam. It was Stachowsky's first home run of the season.

Two more runs in the bottom of the fourth would extend the Drive's lead to 9-1. Christian Lara led off with a single up the middle and Patterson issued back-to-back walks to Johnson and Ramos to load the bases. Jim Conroy then came on in relief but walked Wagner for the Drive's first run of the inning. Granadillo then followed with an RBI single, knocking in Johnson. Conroy was able to settle down though, and got the next two batters to strikeout and induced Bubba Bell into a fly out to end the threat.

Greenville would add a final run in the bottom of the eighth to extend their lead to 10-1. Wagner hit a first pitch offering from Charleston reliever Abel Gomez to left center for his fifth home run of the season.

Charleston would add a meaningless run in the top of the ninth off Hunter Jones. Jones, who pitched 3.0 innings in relief of Guyette, earned his fourth save in as many opportunities.

The victory gave Guyette his fourth straight win and he is now the team leader with five on the season.

The Drive and RiverDogs conclude their four game series Thursday night at West End Field. The Spinx 500 Club will feature $1 drink specials and first pitch is set for 7:05 PM. Greenville will send right-hander Chris Jones to the mound as Charleston counters with right-hander Jason Stephens.
