
Braves Shutout Twice In Doubleheader Loss

Rome, GA -The Augusta GreenJackets swept the Rome Braves in a Wednesday afternoon doubleheader at State Mutual Stadium before 3,287 fans. Both games were shutouts each by the score of 4-0.
In game one the GreenJackets took the lead with an unearned run in the second inning when Jose Yens doubled and later scored on an error by shortstop Elvis Andrus who dropped an infield pop fly. The GreenJackets scored two more runs in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly by Eugenio Velez and a run scoring double by Mike Mooney. The fourth run of the game for Augusta came in the seventh when Ben Copeland scored on a wild pitch by Rome reliever Jose Santiago. The winning pitcher for the GreenJackets was Ryan Shaver (5-3) who shut out Rome for six innings and striking out four. Braves starter Jairo Cuevas took the loss (3-4) but pitched well going five innings allowing just two runs while striking out five.
Augusta picked up right where they left off for game two. The GreenJackets scored in the fourth inning when Eugenio Velez doubled and later scored on a David Maroul base hit. They added to their lead in the fifth inning on an RBI double by Ben Copeland that gave Augusta a 2-0 lead. The GreenJackets scored two more runs in the seventh to gain a 4-0 advantage. Augusta starter Dave McKae earned the victory (1-1) and Rome starter Asher Demme the loss (2-1). Demme had a solid outing going five innings, striking out five and allowing two runs. Wayne Foltin got the save (7) for Augusta.
Atlanta Braves catcher Brian McCann saw action in game one going one for three with a single. McCann was in Rome on a Major League rehab appearance. Rome and Augusta conclude the series tomorrow night at seven. Fans can enjoy two for one beverages during the game. Gates will open at 5pm for music, trivia, and prizes at the Budweiser Beach Club.
