Columbus Catfish News Release

Columbus, GA - Catfish starter RHP Cory Wade was nearly perfect as Columbus (32-27) defeated the Savannah Sand Gnats (23-36) 3-0 at Golden Park Wednesday. The only Savannah hitter to reach base was 3B Ofilio Castro, who doubled to right field as the second batter of the game. After the hit Wade shut down the last 26 hitters consecutively. The day after being named a South Atlantic League All-Star, Wade (3-2) finished the nine shutout innings with 11 strikeouts and picked up the win.

The Catfish scored all three runs in the fourth inning. The two-out rally started with a single by DH David Sutherland, who advanced to third base on an error by CF Francisco Plasencia. Sutherland then scored on a single by CF Lucas May. C Tony Harper followed with a two-run home run, his third of the season.

Savannah starter RHP David Trahan (1-7) pitched well despite the third inning but suffered the loss. In 7 1/3 innings he gave up three runs on six hits and issued the only walk of the game.

The complete game shutout by Wade extends a streak of 24 1/3 consecutive innings by Catfish starting pitchers without allowing a run.

The 26 consecutive outs ties a Columbus record set on May 25, 1970, also against Savannah. Bill Greif allowed a single with two outs in the first inning and retired 26 in a row before an error with one out in the 10th inning.

The Catfish look for a series sweep against the Sand Gnats Thursday at 7:00pm. RHP James McDonald (1-3, 4.20) will oppose RHP Craig Stammen (3-7, 3.68). For tickets or more information call (706) 571-8866 or visit www.ColumbusCatfish.com.
