Delmarva Shorebirds News Release

Greensboro, NC- The Shorebirds fell short on July 4th in Greensboro, losing 5-3 to the Grasshoppers on a pair of unearned runs in the eighth inning. Hunter Mense's pinch-hit two-out double off Brian Parker plated two runs, breaking a 3-3 tie and put Greensboro in a position to snap their seven-game losing streak. After a leadoff single in the ninth by Brian Valichka, Corey Madden retired the next three Shorebirds to finish off Delmarva on Friday night.

It was a fairly wild game that was played through a very steady rain during the final five innings. Groundskeepers tended to the field in between innings and allowed the season-high crowd of over 10,000 enjoy the game uninterrupted. Greensboro's two big sluggers each homered, as Mike Stanton hit his 21st jack of the season to put the Hoppers on top 1-0 in the second, and Bryan Petersen blasted his 16th of the year in the sixth to give Greensboro a 3-2 lead. It was Petersen's fourth straight game with a home run for the Grasshoppers. Delmarva got on the board thanks to Ryan Adams' two-run homer with two outs in the third. At the time, it surged the Shorebirds in front 2-1, but the Hoppers tied it up on Adams' fielding error in the bottom half of the inning, one of two Adams defensive miscues on the night.

Trailing 3-2 in the top of the eighth, Delmarva tied it up on Tyler Henson's two-out single to right that scored Anthony Martinez from third. An inning earlier, Henson was tagged out at the plate trying to score from second on Angle's single to right. Greensboro catcher Torre Langley blocked the plate and nabbed Henson on a pivotal play in the ballgame. Both starters came into the contest with much to prove, and each delivered superb outings. Greensboro hurler Kyle Kaminska, who yielded 12 runs in three innings in his last start, struck out a career-high nine Shorebirds in holding Delmarva to just two runs in six innings. Meanwhile, Delmarva starter Nathan Nery also looked much-improved, although he did surrender the pair of homers to Stanton and Petersen. All in all, Nery was decent, allowing three runs on four hits in five and a third innings.
