Greeneville Flyboys News Release
BURLINGTON - Greeneville opened the flood gates in the top of the ninth inning and scored five runs en route to a 6-1 victory against Burlington on Friday night at Burlington Athletic Stadium. The game would be called in the ninth inning due to unplayable field conditions.
Greeneville (15-10) played another low-scoring contest this season as the Flyboys held a 1-0 advantage until the Sock Puppets rallied to knot the score in the bottom of the sixth inning. Greeneville third baseman Jac Croom finished the night 2-for-5 at the plate with a pair of runs batted in and one run scored for the Flyboys.
The Flyboys opened the scoring in the top of the third inning as Croom delivered a single with two outs in the frame. He would later steal second and advance to third on a throwing error by Burlington's catcher. A wild pitch allowed Croom to score and give Greeneville a 1-0 lead over the Sock Puppets.
Greeneville starter Ryan Day did his part to keep the Sock Puppets off the scoreboard as he worked three scoreless innings while scattering three hits and tallying three strikeouts. Reliever Mason Turner followed Day by fanning three of the six batters that he faced out of the bullpen for the Flyboys.
Burlington rallied to knot the score in the bottom of the sixth inning as Oscar Serratos notched a single to plate D'Andre Smith from third. Smith opened the inning with a single for the Sock Puppets and advanced to third following an error by Greeneville.
Zane Robbins provided a spark for the Flyboys by retiring the side in order for Burlington in the bottom of the eighth inning with three strikeouts. The Flyboys gained a 2-1 lead in the ninth inning as Trevor Austin delivered a sacrifice fly to allow Emanuel Dean to score from third. A walk followed by a hit batter with the bases loaded allowed Greeneville to add insurance runs and increase the advantage to 4-1.
Croom closed the scoring for Greeneville with a two-run single to center field that allowed Christian Ficca and Darius Perry to score and make it 6-1. Following the hit by Croom, both teams would be asked to leave the field as heavy rains moved through Burlington. The game would be called following a 45-minute weather delay.
Greeneville heads to Johnson City on Saturday night before returning to Pioneer Park to host the Doughboys on Sunday, July 4th at 7 p.m. Tickets are available by calling the Flyboys ticket office at 423-609-7400.
