Burlington Sock Puppets News Release
BURLINGTON, N.C. -- The Burlington Sock Puppets fell to the Greeneville Flyboys in a rain-shortened contest on Friday by a score of 6-1. The game was a tight contest until the ninth inning, when the Flyboys exploded for five runs.
The game started off in a pitchers duel, with Hand Sock hurler Jacob Speaker opposing Greeneville's Ryan Day. No one would score until Greeneville broke the tally in the top of the third against Speaker with an odd sequence of plays. Jac Croom singled, stole second, and advanced to third on an errant pickoff throw to second by catcher Mason Speaker. Day would be pulled after three innings for the Flyboy relief corp.
Mason Turner and Sam Pettycord came in relief of Day, going two innings a piece before Zane Robbins came in to pitch the faithful ninth. Turner struck out three in his two innings of work before Burlington broke through in the scoring column, with their only run of the night. D'Andre Smith came around to score after a single by right fielder Oscar Serratos.
Jacob Speaker would finish the night going seven innings giving up one run on three hits.
After Greeneville's Trevor Austin scored on a sacrifice fly to center field to make the score 2-1, the floodgates opened. A bases loaded walk and a bases loaded hit-by-pitch scored two runs for Greeneville before Jac Croom punctuated the game with a 2 run RBI single. That would make the score 6-1, when the sky opened with a torrential downpour. With the rain, the game was called early, with the final score 6-1.
With the loss, the Sock Puppets dropped to 9-15-1 on the year, and the Flyboys improved to 15-10. Burlington travels to Danville to face the Otterbots on Saturday from American Legion Field.
