Reno Aces News Release

TACOMA, Wash. - Josh Green tossed a near-eight inning gem in his career-high outing to propel the Aces to a 2-1 victory over Tacoma on Friday night.

The Aces' starter hurled 93 pitches in his 7.2 innings of action, allowing just one run on eight hits with four strikeouts. His 7.2 frames off the rubber marked the longest of his career, surpassing the seven innings he tossed three times.

Through 50 games this season, Green is the only starter to surpass six frames of work as the Aces only completed six innings on six occasions this season.

Michael De La Cruz made his first start with Reno and recorded his first hit with the team, taking Darren McCaughan deep in the fifth for a solo home run.

Seth Beer recorded his 20th double of the season, tying Tacoma's Cal Raleigh for the league lead. Reno also moved to 13-2 in games when its first baseman belts a two-bagger.

A pitching duel ensued through the opening four frames as Green and the Rainiers' McCaughan allowed a combined no runs on six hits with six strikeouts. Reno's right-hander finished off the bottom of the second by forcing a 6-4-3 double play to prevent Tacoma from moving past first base.

After a blank top of the third, Green forced the Rainiers into its second double play in the bottom half, getting Mariners' No. 2 prospect Jarred Kelenic to smack a grounder to Seth Beer at first for the 3-6-1 twin-killing.

The Aces threatened in the top of the fourth, nearly breaking the scoreless tie. Ildemaro Vargas reached on an error to start the frame before advancing to second on Beer's single to right. After Drew Ellis moved Vargas to third on a deep fly out to center and Stuart Fairchild walked to load the bases, Tacoma's McCaughan worked out of trouble and stranded all three runners on base.

Reno finally broke through in the fifth, taking a 1-0 advantage on a solo home run by De La Cruz to right-center. After Vargas doubled two batters later, Beer smacked his 20th two-bagger of the season, bringing the Aces' shortstop around to score and taking a two-run edge, 2-0.

The two tallies were all the Aces needed as Green continued to dominate off the rubber, enforcing his third double play of the evening in the bottom of the sixth and forcing Kelenic to ground into his two-out affair of the game.

The 25-year-old moved into unchartered territory, becoming the first Aces starter to pitch in the seventh inning. The Baton Rouge, La., native struck out Dillon Thomas to post the longest start by a Reno pitcher this season.

Green eventually surpassed his longest career outing with a fly out to left field in the bottom of the eighth, reaching 7.1 innings of work. Despite getting two outs in the eighth, Tacoma finally broke Reno's ace, tagging him with one run in the frame on an RBI single by Donovan Walton. Junior Garcia came on to relieve Green in the eighth and stranded two runners in scoring position.

Miguel Aguilar tossed a perfect ninth inning to pick up his career-high seventh save of the season.

Reno returns to action on Saturday against the Tacoma Rainiers, with the first pitch slated for 7:05 p.m. PT. Saturday's contest can be heard on renoaces.com or locally on KPLY 630 AM with Zack Bayrouty on the call.
