Green Goes Distance To Help Travs Snap Six-Game Skid

July 6, 2007 - Texas League (TL1)
Arkansas Travelers News Release

Dickey-Stephens Park, North Little Rock, AR - RHP Nick Green (6-6) threw a nine-inning complete game holding the top offense in the league to five base hits as the Arkansas Travelers (5-10, 36-49) snapped a six-game skid with a 4-1 victory over the Frisco RoughRiders (10-5, 57-28). After Frisco had four of their first nine batters reach base, Green responded by retiring 21 of the next 22 batters to finish the Travs' first nine-inning complete game of the season. In his first nine-inning complete game at double-A, Green did not walk a batter and struck out two and is the first pitcher to defeat Frisco RHP Luis Mendoza (9-1). Mendoza finished seven innings allowing two runs (one earned) on eight base hits, two walks and five strikeouts. The RoughRiders had been 14-1 and games Mendoza pitched, but the Travs broke a 1-1 tie in the sixth inning with an unearned run and expanded their lead when 3B Freddy Sandoval drove in two runs with an eighth-inning single. RF Coby Smith had an outstanding game finishing 3-for-3 with a double and a run scored and he also threw out a Frisco runner at the plate. With their season series now complete, the Travs dropped eight games out of 12 to the RoughRiders.

Before Green found his groove, he needed help to get out of the first inning. Anthony Webster began the game with a double off the right field wall. Casey Benjamin bounced out to move Webster up to third base. Webster attempted to score when German Duran flied out to right field, but Smith uncorked a perfect throw to the plate and Webster neglected to slide instead running into the tag of C Corey Myers to end the inning.

Frisco still got out to a third-inning lead as the first three batters all reached base against Green. 1B Emerson Frostad hit the first pitch of the inning for a double to center and moved to third when Kevin Richardson singled to left field. Tony Roth then punched a single through the left side of the infield bringing home Frostad. Then Webster dropped a sacrifice bunt to put runners at second and third with just one out. Green wiggled out of the inning by getting Benjamin to pop to short and Duran to fly to center beginning a string of 16 consecutive outs.

Mendoza kept the Travs from scoring until the fourth inning. SS Sean Rodriguez hit a one-out double to left-center and scored when Matt Pali lined a single to right field to tie the game, at 1-1.

Travs 2B Adam Morrissey drew a walk to begin the sixth inning and was bunted to second by Sandoval. With two outs, Mendoza got Pali to ground to first base. But the ball bounced off Frostad and rolled behind him allowing Morrissey to score from second base on an error giving the Travs a 2-1 lead.

Mendoza left the game after seven inning and the 'Riders brought on LHP Bill White. Smith hit a leadoff double off White in the eighth for his third base hit. White then hit Brad Coon with a pitch before Morrissey bunted both runners up. Sandoval then slashed a line drive single to right field bringing home both runners capping the offense for the night.

Time of game was 2:17 and the paid attendance was 5,342.
