Springfield Cardinals News Release

The Springfield Cardinals set a new season-high by pounding out 18 base hits, completing a three-game sweep by hammering the Midland RockHounds by a score of 9-2 on Friday night at Hammons Field.

Colby Rasmus had four hits and his first career grand slam, as the Cards swept the Midland RockHounds for the second time in the last two weeks. The Redbirds took three from the RockHounds in Midland last week, giving them six straight victories over the Hounds to finish their season-series with a 6-3 record.

Springfield broke open a one-run game by scoring six times in the fifth, chasing Midland starter Mario Ramos. After loading the bases with no outs, Ramos got taken deep by Colby Rasmus for his 16th homer of the year, making it 5-0. A Mark Hamilton two-run double capped the inning, as Springfield went up 7-0.

Rasmus had another RBI in the sixth, a run-scoring double to make it 6-0. Rasmus' five-RBI night ties him with teammate Juan Richardson, who had an RBI double in the first, as both now have 52 RBIs to lead the Texas League. Bryan Anderson capped the Springfield scoring in the sixth, as his third hit of the game brought home Rasmus for a 9-0 lead.

Cards' starter Mitchell Boggs picked up his sixth straight win, working into the seventh inning, allowing just an unearned run on two hits over six-plus innings. After giving up a lead-off double to Javier Herrera, Boggs was removed in favor of reliever Matt Scherer. After a passed ball allowed Herrera to move to third, a run-scoring single by Vince Faison plated the unearned run, as Midland broke up the shut-out at 9-1.

Matt Scherer allowed a run in the eighth on an RBI single from Brant Colamarino, finishing the scoring at 9-2. Cards' reliever Kyle McClellan worked a scoreless ninth to wrap it up.

The Cardinals would like to congratulate and wish the best of luck to both Bryan Anderson and Colby Rasmus, who will be participating in Sunday's Future's Game in San Francisco, CA, as part of Major League Baseball's All-Star Festivities. The game can be seen live on ESPN 2 on Sunday at 3pm Central.

Springfield improves to a season-best, ten games over the .500 mark at 46-36 and 10-5 in the second half. The Cards look to make it four straight, welcoming the Frisco RoughRiders to town on Saturday night. Jaime Garcia (3-8) will go to the hill on Saturday evening, while Frisco hasn't decided on a starter. 5,000 fans will receive a special Sluggerbird Cap thanks to Ozarks Coca-Cola. Game time on Saturday night is 6:10pm and gates open at 5:10pm. Tickets for all Cardinals' games are available by calling (417) 863-2143 or online at www.springfieldcardinals.com.
