Spokane Chiefs News Release
Five different players scored goals and the Spokane Chiefs held the Portland Winter Hawks to 24 shots on their way to a 5-2 win in the Spokane Arena. The win was Spokane's first of the year at home and fourth overall. Spokane sits in second place in the U.S. Division with 10 points heading into Saturday night's home game versus the Kelowna Rockets.
The Chiefs tallied the first two goals of the night via specialty teams scoring once on the power play and again shorthanded. Chris Bruton scored first for Spokane, his third of the year, at 5:13 of the opening period. Drayson Bowman and Mitch Wahl had the assists.
Tyler Johnson then made it 2-0 when he stole the puck in the neutral zone and skated in one-on-one against Portland's starter Mark Guggenberger. The 17-year-old went to the backhand to finish the pretty goal for his second marker in as many home games. The shorthanded goal was Spokane's first of the year.
Portland scored at 17:43 of the first to make it 2-1 through 20-minutes and then tied it up 2:19 into the second on a goal by Radim Valchar.
The 2-2 score was shortlived after Drayson Bowman found the back of the net a little over a minute later. Seventeen-seconds following, at 3:39, Mitch Wahl pushed the Spokane advantage to two goals with his second of the season.
Curtis Kelner scored the lone goal of the third period, set up by Seth Compton and Judd Blackwater.
Bruton, Bowman and Wahl all finished the night with a goal and an assist.
Kevin Armstrong made 22 saves on the night and received a game misconduct for a fight with Guggenberg at the 20:00 of the third.
The Chiefs outshot Portland 43-24 and went 1-4 on the power play and 5-5 on the penalty kill.
The Chiefs will host the Rockets for the first of four meetings on the year Saturday night at 7:00. Fans are encouraged to bring their skates and Skate with the Chiefs following the game.
Tickets for all home games are available by calling the Chiefs office at (509) 535-PUCK or TicketsWest at (800) 325-SEAT.
