Brooklyn Cyclones News Release
Brooklyn, NY - The Cyclones led early but faltered late as they fell to the Greensboro Grasshoppers by the score of 6-5 on Thursday evening. Jose Peroza hit his third home run during the month of July and is now batting .333 (9-27) for the month.
The Cyclones took advantage of an early throwing error from Greensboro shortstop Dariel Lopez in the bottom of the first to score the game's first run. With Rowdey Jordan - back in the Cyclones lineup for the first time in a month - on third base with two outs, Nic Gaddis hit a grounder to short but Lopez's throw was wild and Jordan scored to make it 1-0.
Luis Moreno made the start for Brooklyn and one of his only blemishes came in the top of the 2nd when he was called for a balk with a runner on third that allowed Dariel Lopez to score and knot the game at 1-1. The righthander tossed 5.2 innings, scattering five hits and two runs, one earned, with one walk and two strikeouts.
Brooklyn jumped back in front in the bottom of the second on an RBI groundout from Matt Rudick and then added in in the bottom of the third courtesy of a two-run opposite field home run from Jose Peroza that made it 4-1.
But in the top of the sixth the Greensboro comeback began. The 'Hoppers scored courtesy of two Cyclones errors to trim the Brooklyn lead to 4-2. An inning later they got even closer on an RBI single from Yoyner Fajardo that made it 4-3 in the seventh.
But the big blow of the game came in the top of the eighth when Abrahan Gutierrez connected on a three-run home run off of Cyclones reliever Justin Courtney to give Greensboro a 6-4 lead. For Courtney it was the first run he had allowed since June 1st.
Brooklyn wouldn't go quietly as Nic Gaddis had a triple in the ninth, and came home on a wild pitch to trim the Brooklyn deficit to 6-5, but that is how the game would end as Jose Peroza struck out and Shervyen Newton lined out to end the game.
Brooklyn will look to rebound on Friday evening when they take on the Grasshoppers at 7:00 PM. There will be post-game fireworks, the first 1,000 fans will receive a Cyclones Skyline Socks and there's a special offer for Howie Rose Talking Alarm Clocks when you use code CLOCK.
