Worcester Tornadoes News Release

For the second straight day the Tornadoes raced off to a 7-2 lead and Grand Prairie responded, but the second time around the AirHogs wouldn't fall short in their comeback bid. Grand Prairie scored four runs in the top half of the seventh to tie the game and finished off their ferocious comeback with a 3-run, home-run from Andres Rodriguez in the ninth inning.

Rodriguez hit two home runs on the day and drove in five runs for the AirHogs to help Grand Prairie take the second game of the three-game set. Third baseman Greg Porter added a home run and an RBI single to tie the game at seven.

The furious comeback ruined the Tornadoes best scoring performance in a single inning of 2012, when they put seven runs across in the bottom of the third. Alex Trezza and Jerod Edmondson had the big hits in the inning, with Trezza blasting a 3-run home run to right field and Edmondson crushing a bases-clearing double to center that put Worcester up 3-0.

Griffin Bailey earned the win for Grand Prairie pitching a perfect eight inning, while Justin Dowdy picked up his seventh save of the season. The AirHogs bullpen bailed out starter Teddy Nowell, as four AirHogs relievers threw six and-two thirds, scoreless inning. Derrick Miramontes and Ronnie Morales combined to pitch four and two-thirds innings scoreless, after both pitchers pitched yesterday.

Nick Serino took his second loss for the Tornadoes after allowing his second three-run home run of the season. Zach Zuercher looked good early for the Tornadoes allowing just three runs through the first six innings, before allowing four runs, three earned in the seventh inning.

Grand Prairie jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning on back-to-back home runs to lead off the inning. Andres Rodriguez crushed a ball just short of the highway in left-center to leadoff and lefty Greg Porter followed with a home run over the center-field fence.

Worcester turned the tables quickly in the bottom of the third inning with a touchdown worth of runs. Tony Patane, Alex Nunez and Brandon Pinckney all walked against Nowell and scampered home on the big hit from Edmondson. With one out and the bases-loaded, Edmondson crushed a pitch to the warning track just out of the reach of Keanon Simon to make it 3-2 Worcester. Two batters later, after a Johnny Welch walk, Alex Trezza blasted a home-run onto the Holy Cross football field to give Worcester a 6-2 lead. The Tornadoes would add one more run, when Patane singled through the left-side to score Nick Salott who had doubled after the Trezza home run.

Grand Prairie began chipping away at the Tornadoes lead with a single run in the fifth and tied the game in the seventh. The AirHogs tallied four hits and a walk in the inning, with the big hit coming from Simon who finished 3-for-5 with two doubles and three RBI.

After a scoreless eight inning, the AirHogs put the game by a matter of inches. After Bryan Frichter walked on a 3-2 count, Brian Myrow hit what looked to be a textbook double play ball to Pinckney. Instead the ball took a ridiculously, high hop over the second baseman's head and put runners on first and third with not outs against Serino. Rodriguez crushed a 1-1 pitch over the left field fence just out of the reach of Brendon Kelliher in left. Serino retired the next three batters, but Worcester went down 1-2-3 in the bottom half of the inning to fall 10-7.

The Tornadoes and AirHogs will play the rubber match of series Wednesday at 1:05 p.m. with Ryan Bicondoa squaring off against Lance Day.
