Florida Firecats News Release

Estero, FL- The Florida Firecats are pleased to announce that FB/LB Steve Gorrie has won the af2Â’s U.S. Army Ironman of the Week award.

The U.S. Army Ironman of the Week award is rewarded to the player that has the best two-way or three-way performance of the week.

“I know it is an individual award, but I look at it as a team award,” Gorrie said after recently moving into first in rushing for the entire league. “Without those three lineman in front of me doing their job, I am not going anywhere.”

Gorrie, whose nine carries for 57 yards against Macon last Saturday broke the FirecatsÂ’ team record, currently leads the league with 135 yards rushing. His 57 yards is the best personal performance by an af2 player this season. He is a mere 86 yards away from breaking the current FirecatsÂ’ season rushing record, set by former Firecat fullback Johnny Frost. Gorrie also tied the FirecatsÂ’ single game touchdown record by scoring three times via the turf.

On defense, Gorrie made two solo stops, and he deflected three Caleb Slover passes.

The league award is the first for Gorrie in his short arenafootball2 career. The last player to receive a weekly accolade from the league was Ken Mastrole last year, when an eight touchdown performance earned him Baby Ruth Real Deal Offensive Player of the Week honors.

The Florida Firecats take off for Columbus, Georgia, this weekend to take on their division foes, the Columbus Wardogs. The game will be broadcasted by Dave Leval courtesy of ESPN-770. Kickoff is set for 7:30 with coverage beginning at 7:05. The next home game is May 29 when the Firecats get a rematch with the Memphis Xplorers. Tickets can be bought by calling (239) 390-2287.
