Published on May 5, 2004 under arenafootball2 (af2) News Release
CHICAGO - By a margin of three points, the unbeaten Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers has been voted the No. 1 team in the Week 6 Coaches' Poll, the league office announced today. The Pioneers earned 275 points, including 13 first-place votes to earn the No. 1 ranking for the first time. The three-point margin between first and second was the closest vote since Quad City topped Tennessee Valley by one point in the Week 1 poll.
The Wichita Stealth, who were idle in Week 5, slipped to the second spot with 272 points and 11 first-place votes. The Quad City Steamwheelers moved up to third from fourth a week ago with 217 points. The Louisville Fire went from third to fourth this week but did earn one first-place vote.
Other teams gaining spots in the Top 12 this week include the Cape Fear Wildcats, Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz and Florida Firecats. The Wildcats jumped from eighth to sixth, the Yard Dawgz went from ninth to eighth and the Firecats gained one spot by moving from 12th to 11th. The Rio Grande Valley Dorados broke into the Top 12 for the first time this week, holding the 12th position in the poll.
This week's schedule features one matchup of teams in the Top 12. The No. 2 Stealth head to Hidalgo to take on the No. 12 Dorados on Saturday night at 8:30 p.m. ET.
Each week during the season af2 coaches vote for the Top 12 teams in the league by ranking them one through 12 on a ballot. Teams ranked first receive 12 points with the point value decreasing by one for each place below first, meaning a team ranked 12th receives one point. Total points determine the Top 12 list. In the event of a tie in total points, the team with the greater number of first-place votes is ranked higher. The af2 Coaches' Poll is announced every Wednesday during the regular season. Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own team and the poll results have no bearing on postseason qualification.
