The Deuce Scoop

May 5, 2004 - arenafootball2 (af2) News Release

FEEL THE RUSH: Florida Firecats FB/LB Steve Gorrie ran for 57 yards last week against Macon to set a league-high for the 2004 season. It was also a new Firecats single game record. For the year, Gorrie leads af2 with 135 yards on the ground, averaging 33.8 yards per game. If he were to keep his yardage pace up for the duration of the season, he would finish with around 540 yards. The all-time record for most rushing yards in a season is 439 by Darnell Arceneaux during the 2002 season. Below is a look at the current rushing leaders in af2:

BRINGING IT TO THE HOUSE: Memphis' Kevin Prentiss returned to kickoffs for touchdowns in last week's game against the Tennessee Valley Vipers, giving him three touchdown returns for the season. Quad City's Jeff Hewitt also has three to share the league lead. The all-time record for kickoff return touchdowns in a season is eight, shared by three players. Lincoln Dupree did it for Peoria in 2002, Lawrence Pullen had eight for Jacksonville in 2002 and Adial Trone ran eight back for the Steeldogs during the 2000 season. Below is a look at the four players on pace to challenge that record.

FUMBLE FINDER: Last week against Hawaii, Bossier-Shreveport's Shadrick McAffe recovered a fumble and ran it back 26 yards for a touchdown. For the season, McAffe has five fumble recoveries and is one away from matching the all-time single season record of six. Three other players in af2 history recorded six fumble recoveries in a season: Anthony Giovingo (Lafayette 2001), Dedric Parham (Tennessee Valley 2001) and Cornelius Coe (Quad City 2001).

LET HISTORY BE OUR GUIDE: Over the past two seasons combined, 19 teams have been undefeated or only had one loss through the fifth week of the respective season and 17 of those teams (89.5%) went on to make the playoffs. Through Week 5 of the 2003 season, six teams had perfect records or only one loss with all six qualifying for the postseason. During the 2002 season, 13 teams were undefeated or had only one loss through Week 5 and 11 of those clubs went to the playoffs.

HOME SWEET HOME: Last week home teams went 8-3 to bring the season total up to 36-17 for a .679 win percentage. Last season home teams went 130-85-1 for a .604 win percentage. Overall in the history of af2 home teams have gone 501-330-1 for a .603 win percentage during the regular season. Below is a season-by-season chart:

M-WALL CONTINUES TO BALL: Two weeks ago Tulsa quarterback Michael Wall broke a Tulsa Talons record for touchdown passes in a single game by throwing nine against the Peoria Pirates. Last week he followed up by throwing eight against the Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz. Through four games, Wall has tossed 28 touchdowns and only two interceptions. Bakersfield's Chad Elliott is the only other player with 28 touchdown passes, but Elliott has used five games to reach that number. The all-time record for most touchdown passes in a season is 93 by Tony Zimmerman last year with Quad City. Wall is on a pace to reach 112.

SCORING LEADERS: Green Bay's Randall Lane continues to challenge the all-time single season scoring record with 84 points through four games. The all-time record is 284 points by Shon King during the 2000 season. Lane is on pace to reach 336. Tulsa's Mitch Allner and Cape Fear's Matt Burstein are also on pace to challenge the all-time mark. Below is a look at the top six scorers in af2 through Week 5:
