August 24, 2009 - Eastern League (EL1)
New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
Trenton, NJ- Nick Gorneault smashed a three-run home run, and Adrian Martin matched a season high with six strikeouts over 5.1 innings, as the New Hampshire Fisher Cats topped the Trenton Thunder, 4-0, in the finale of a four-game series at Waternfront Park on Monday night.
New Hampshire (58-69) took a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning when Gorneault (2-for-4, HR, 3 RBI) belted his seventh homer of the year, and third in his last six games, a three-run shot off Zach McAllister that cleared a 35-foot high left-field billboard at Waterfront Park, distancing nearly 400 feet.
The lead increased to 4-0 in the top of the third when Todd Donovan (1-for-3, 2 BB, 2 R, SB) led off with a single, stole his team-leading 31st base and scored when Scott Campbell (1-for-5, RBI, R) lined a single to left.
McCallister (6-5), who entered the game with an Eastern League-leading 2.13 ERA, was lifted after allowing four runs on four hits in three innings, with three walks and one strikeout, bumping his ERA to 2.40.
The Fisher Cats made it 5-0 in the top of the sixth against reliever Eric Wordekemper. Brad Emaus (1-for-4, BB, R) drew a walk, and David Cooper (1-for-3, 2B, RBI, 2 BB) drove him in with his club-leading 30th double into the left field corner.
Trenton (63-64) finally got to Martin in the sixth inning, with Marcos Vechionacci (3-for-5, 2 RBI) stroking a two-run, bases-loaded single to break up the shutout bid, drawing the Thunder to within 5-2.
Wil Ledezma entered with two on and one out, getting out of the jam by inducing a pair of ground outs to second base.
Martin (3-2) earned his first win in a starting role since July 11 by yielding two runs on six hits and four walks.
The Fisher Cats put it out of reach by scoring three unearned runs against Humberto Sanchez in the top of the seventh. New Hampshire loaded the bases on a walk to Brian Jeroloman (0-for-3, BB), a double by Jonathan Diaz (2-for-4, 2B, R) and a walk to Donovan. Emaus then grounded to shortstop Eduardo Nunez, who threw wildly to home plate, allowing Diaz and Donovan to score. Al Quintana (1-for-4, RBI, R) capped the three-run inning with a run-scoring single to left, plating Campbell, who reached on a fielder's choice.
The Thunder didn't go quietly, as they scored a run in the eighth against Ledezma on a sacrifice fly by Austin Krum (0-for-3, BB, SF, RBI), and they added two runs against Zach Dials in the ninth inning on an RBI double by Noah Hall (1-for-5, 2B, RBI, R), and a run-scoring ground out by Edwar Gonzalez (2-for-5, 2B, 2 R, RBI).
