Amarillo Gorillas News Release

Amarillo, TX – Character and scoring goals in bunches are two things that highly skilled forward Chris Robertson is best known for and the Amarillo Gorillas hope those traits will bring instant leadership to the hockey club this season.

The Gorillas announced today that they have signed Robertson for the 2002-2003 Central Hockey League season, bringing the number of players inked to contracts to three, including Brian Pellerin and Mark DeSantis.

"To have a successful club at any level you need to start a team with a core of quality players and leaders, and with the signing of Chris Robertson we have continued in this fashion," said head coach Joe Ferras. "He competes hard every night and will play a huge role in the success of the Gorillas hockey club on the ice and in the dressing room."

Robertson played for Amarillo of the Central Hockey League last season where he averaged one point in each of his 19 games with five goals and 14 assists for 19 points and 20 penalty minutes.

The native of Calgary, Alberta, Canada attended the training camp of the Minnesota North Stars as a free agent in 1989.

Over his 13-year professional career there have been many highlights for the talented centerman, including two Canadian College Hockey Championships in 1987-88 and again in 1992-93. In the second championship run, Robertson was team captain of the Mount Royal College Cougars.

Robertson also captained the Greensboro Monarchs to the 1990-91 East Coast Hockey League Championship.

Robertson was a Western Professional Hockey League all-star in the 1996-97 season, while serving as a player-assistant coach with the New Mexico Scorpions. In 1998-99, Robertson was a WPHL all-star with the Corpus Christi Ice Rays and that same season was chosen as the league's Most Valuable Player. In that season, Robertson was third in league scoring with 42 goals and 67 assists for 109 points in 64 games.

In the WPHL's 1999 Best-of-the-Best Poll, voted on by players and staff, Robertson was named best all-around player, best stickhandler and best on shootouts.

Robertson has also spent time with the Richmond Renegades of the East Coast Hockey League, the Tulsa Oilers of the Central Hockey League, the Lake Charles Ice Pirates of the Western Professional Hockey League, the Port Huron Border Cats of the United Hockey League and one year with Esbjerg of Denmark. In 456 professional games, Robertson has picked up 232 goals and 365 assists for 597 points and 603 penalty minutes.
