Buzzards Inline Hockey School Makes A Move!

July 10, 2002 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
El Paso Buzzards News Release

EL PASO, Texas – With the summer inline hockey season already on the go, the El Paso Buzzards and Nations-Tobin Inline Hockey School, that had been housed at the Nations-Tobin Recreation Center, moved to the Chalio Acosta Recreation Center at 4321 Delta, adjacent to the El Paso County Coliseum.

In May 2000, El Paso voters approved a $75 million bond issue that allocated $2.1 million toward five projects at the Nations-Tobin Recreation Center. The projects include the building of a new inline facility that would be an addition to, and quadruple the size of, the current facility located at 8831 Railroad. On July 1st, Dan Guard, recreation coordinator at Nations-Tobin, and his staff packed up the boards, glass and "the blue floor" and headed south on US-54 to the temporary site where Guard expects to be located for the next year.

The move to Chalio Acosta made sense for the inline program, as the facility houses all of the other city-wide sports programs. Due to facility constraints, the inline program was housed out of Nations-Tobin rather than at Chalio Acosta originally.

"So far the move has been successful and we've been able to do everything we've set out to do," said Guard. "Our main limitations have only been because so many other sports are housed here in addition to hockey. In fact, due to constraints, we will begin holding hockey school on Monday nights at 6:00 pm beginning July 15th." Guard is confident that the program will continue to grow and more El Pasoans will be turned on to hockey.

"We'll play hockey no matter where the rink is," said Rhett Dudley, Buzzards' defenseman and an instructor at the hockey school. "The kids keep coming out, we have our classes and a lot of fun."

The El Paso Buzzards Inline Hockey School will take place at the Chalio Acosta Recreation Center tonight, Wednesday, July 10th at 6:00 pm and will change to its Monday night schedule beginning Monday, July 15th at 6:00 pm. For more information, contact Dan Guard at 534-0254.

The El Paso Buzzards play in the professional Central Hockey League. The team finished their season with a 36-24-4 record and made it to the second round of the play-offs for the first time in four years. Season ticket and sponsorship packages are available for the 2002-2003 season by calling the Buzzards' office at (915) 533-PUCK or by visiting www.elpasobuzzards.com.
