Gorillas Reach New agreement with Civic Center
February 16, 2009 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Amarillo Gorillas News Release
Amarillo, TX 2/16/09 - The Amarillo Dusters of the af2 and Amarillo Gorillas of the CHL have reached an agreement to remain at the Amarillo Civic Center for the next five years, the teams reported Monday.
Over the weekend, an official deal was inked, linking the two squads in a deal to last through 2013. The new contract includes both teams, eliminating the separate lease agreements held before Monday.
"This is a great opportunity to show the people of Amarillo that the Dusters are here to stay," said Dusters General Manager Joe Morgado. "We are getting excited for this upcoming season, and are eager to continue our great relationship with the Amarillo Civic Center."
While the Gorillas are in the midst of their seventh season in Amarillo (and their 13th season as a franchise), the Dusters are preparing to kick off their fifth season in 2008. Both teams will now call the Civic Center home for the next five years, unless a new facility is built by the city of Amarillo.
"It is important for fans to realize that the Gorillas are committed to the community of Amarillo," said Gorillas General Manager Robert Simmons. "With a new coach (Brian Pellerin) and a new arena lease, we feel we have laid a solid foundation for the years ahead."
The Gorillas will play on Civic Center ice this Saturday and Sunday, taking on the Laredo Bucks. Meanwhile, the Dusters' 2009 season will get under way on March 27, as they take on the rival Oklahoma City YardDawgz to begin the af2's tenth anniversary campaign.
