Colorado Eagles News Release
AMARILLO, TX â The Colorado Eagles lost their second straight road game 2-1 Tuesday night at the hands of the Amarillo Gorillas. The Gorillas, after losing 6-2 to Colorado a week ago, out shot the Eagles 37-24 and controlled the pace of play for most of the game. Amarillo's goaltender Steve Briere gave up the lone Eagles goal on a power play goal by Chris Hartsburg. Kelly Miller and Dave Rattray each had a goal in the second period, Miller's was a short-handed goal. Eagles goaltender Tyler Weiman again played outstanding keeping the Eagles in the game saving 35 of 37 shots. The Eagles record falls to 13-5-4, 30 points, and they remain in second place in the Northwest Division five points behind the Wichita Thunder who beat the Oklahoma City Blazers 4-2 tonight. Amarillo's record is now 11-10-2, 24 points and they move into third place in the Southwest Division.
Chris Hartsburg scored the all important first goal at 16:32 on a power play. Sean Robertson snapped a shot on goal, and Hartsburg picked up the rebound and snuck the puck through Briere's legs. Karlis Zirnis notched a helper along with Robertson. Amarillo out shot the Eagles 13-7, and had more quality chances, but Weiman was up to the task saving all 13 shots. Colorado went into the locker room with a one-goal lead.
Amarillo continued to pour the shots on goal in the second period, and was rewarded with a couple lucky bounces. With Colorado on the power play, Ben Gustavson picked up a loose puck and one of the Eagles defenders lost his step. Gustavson streaked down the right wing boards, ripped a shot on net, and Kelly Miller was there to pick up the rebound for a short-handed goal and tied the game at one. At the 14:56 mark, the Gorillas picked up the lead on an awkward bounce from behind the net that somehow hit Weiman and went into the net. Dave Rattray picked up the goal and Scott Wray added the helper. After two periods, the Gorillas were still dominating in the shot department, out shooting the Eagles 26-15.
Amarillo tightened up the defense in the third period and Steve Briere made some great saves to hold on to the win.
The Eagles take on the New Mexico Scorpions tomorrow night in Albuquerque for their third game of what is tied for a season-long five-game road trip. They will then travel to Texas after Christmas to take on the Odessa Jackalopes and the same Amarillo Gorillas on December 28 and 29 respectively.
