RIO GRANDE VALLEY KILLER BEES

2004-05 WEEKLY RELEASE

FOR THE WEEK OF Dec. 20 - Dec. 26th

NO FURTHER SUSPENSIONS...FINES ISSUED FROM GATEWAY CITY GRAPPLE

The Central Hockey League has reviewed the video tape of the incidents that occurred between the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees and the Laredo Bucks at the Laredo Entertainment Center on Friday. The league has chosen to activate Ryan Shmyr from his indefinite suspension and Shmyr will be in the line-up for the Bees Wednesday. Shmyr was ejected from the game after receiving a match penalty for "slew footing." The match penalty automatically placed Shmyr on an indefinite suspension until CHL representatives could view the tape. After reviewing the videotape the league has determined no additional discipline is warranted. Killer Bees head coach Tracy Egeland was fined an undisclosed amount for receiving a game misconduct and littering the ice with sticks. The league is working closely with members of the Laredo Bucks to take actions against fans which threw objects onto the Bees bench and struck Egeland in the head. No players were involved in the incidents with the fans behind the Bees bench.

WHAT A GAME!

Trailing 4-1 in the third period Saturday night hosting the Oklahoma City Blazers, the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees did something they have not done in their previous 14 games (0-13-1) when trailing after two periods of play... they won. With 14:10 remaining and trailing 4-1, Derek Holland, Blaz Emersic and Matic Kralj combined for goals 5:18 apart to tie the game, and then Jason Tessier dumped the puck into the zone on net and Blazers goaltender Boyd Ballard misplayed the puck and it went into the net with 1:17 remaining to give the Bees the 5-4 win. It was the biggest comeback in Killer Bees history. The four goals in the third period was a first in franchise history, for a third period, and it was the third time overall it had been accomplished in a single period. It was only the second win in team history when trailing after two periods.

THIS WEEK'S "INSIDE THE NUMBERS"

1 - Win Needed - By goaltender Jeff Levy to reach his 100th pro-career win in net.

5 - Goals in a Game - The Killer Bees five goal tally on Saturday (third time this season) ended a 20-game span of games without a five-goal output by the Bees. As of this time last season, the Bees were still without a five-goal game performance. They ended the season with seven.

95 - Penalty Minutes - The Bees set a franchise record Friday night in their fiasco with the Laredo Bucks by registering 95 penalty minutes.

ALL WE NEED IS PLAYERS

The CHL officially announced their head coaches and support staff for the 2005 CHL All-Star Game, which will be played January 13th in Laredo. The Northern Conference verses Southern Conference formatted game will have Colorado Eagles head coach Chris Stewart lead the Northern Conference and Lubbock Cotton Kings head coach Chris Dashney will man the Southern Conference squad. The coaches were determined by the team with the best winning percentage through games played on December 19th. Also announced was the CHL All-Star Broadcast Team. Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees broadcaster Chris Due will join Laredo Bucks announcer Joe Dominey and legendary Oklahoma City announcer John Brooks, as the selected trio will broadcast the game on a league-wide basis. This is Due's second all-star appearance, as he was on the 2000 WPHL All-Star Broadcast Team. The game will be broadcasted in the Valley live on either ESPN Radio 1240 AM or Real Country 840 AM, and televised over the internet on CHLTV.com. The CHL has already begun their voting process for game starters. Each team was represented with five players on the voting ballots, broken down by position (1 goaltender, 3 forwards, 2 defensemen), and voting was conducted by coaches, team pr reps, and selected media member(s) per each CHL market. Nominated for the Bees was Jeff Levy, Joe Guenther, Matic Kralj, Bill Newson, Sean Gillam and Jason Tessier. The CHL will announce their starters on Wednesday. After that, the head coaches and the CHL hockey operations department will sort out remaining players (reserves) that will participate in the game. Any player can be a reserve and is not limited to the five nominees, but each CHL team must be represented by at least one player. Bill Newson was the lone all-star representative for the Bees last season.

BEE OF THE WEEK

This week's Killer Bees "Bee of the Week," for their performance in last week's three games, is defenseman Sean Gillam. The Bees Captain is on pace for a career best offensive season and tallied a pair of power play goals and an assist for a three point output to lead Bees defensemen in scoring for the week. His two power play goals came in consecutive games (12/14,12/17) against the Laredo Bucks and gives him 9 on his career. With 13 points (4g,9a), the Lethbridge, Alberta native leads the Bees in scoring amongst defensemen.
