Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
OMAHA, NE - As the Omaha Royals embark on their first road trip of 2010, the Triple-A team's roster today underwent a series of changes.
Alex Gordon joins the team tonight, as Omaha opens an eight-game road trip at Albuquerque. Kansas City's third baseman is continuing the rehab assignment that began last week for a broken thumb. Also today, O-Royals reliever Josh Rupe had his contract purchased by the parent club. Rupe will take the bullpen spot of Roman Colon, who was designated for assignment. And Omaha catcher Edwin Bellorin was placed on the inactive list, after leaving the team to go home to Venezuela due to the death of a family member. Catcher Jeff Howell, who had been on Double-A Northwest Arkansas' disabled list since the season began, was activated and promoted to Omaha.
Gordon began his rehab assignment last Thursday with class-A Wilmington, as he recovers from a broken right thumb suffered while sliding into second base during a Cactus League game on March 6. In seven games with the Blue Rocks, the 26-year old former Husker star hit .235 (4-for-17) with no home runs and two RBI. He picked up nine walks, compared to three strikeouts, and scored seven runs.
Rupe, 27, tossed five scoreless innings over two relief appearances with Omaha, allowing two hits and a walk, while striking out four. Colon, 30, allowed four runs on five hits in two innings with KC for an 18.00 ERA.
The 28-year old Bellorin has played in four games for the O-Royals, going 3-for-12 (.250) at the plate. Howell, 26, was Kansas City's 10th round pick in the 2005 draft out of Florida Southern College. Last season marked his first year at the Double-A level, when he batted .262 with four home runs and 24 RBI in 62 games for Northwest Arkansas.
While the Royals are on the road, fans can catch the action on Omaha's KOIL AM-180, or online at www.oroyals.com . The Royals next game at Rosenblatt Stadium is Saturday, April 24 at 7:05 p.m. when the Albuquerque Isotopes visit to begin a four-game series. That night the first 1,500 fans will receive George Brett powder blue jerseys, courtesy of Conagra.
