Gonzo Party: Three Long Balls Lead Barons To 10-6 Victory Spencer Adams pitches six strong innings in first victory
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Baseballs went flying off the bats of the Birmingham Barons on Saturday night in Montgomery. Nick Basto, Keon Barnum and Brett Austin all clobbered home runs in the first five innings as the Barons took down the Biscuits 10-6.
Birmingham got on the board early against Biscuits' starter Hunter Wood, when in the second inning Austin drove in Trey Michalczewski with an RBI triple into the right field corner.
Up 1-0 in the third, the long balls came fast and furious. Basto, who went 2-for-5 on the night, sent his third home run of the season, a two run shot out to left center field to give the Barons a 3-0 cushion. Later in the inning, Barnum hit a towering opposite field shot that cleared the wall and landed on the train tracks in left field to push the lead to 5-0.
Birmingham didn't stop there, scoring three more in the fifth inning. Hunter Jones smacked an RBI double and Austin capped his three RBI night by becoming the last Baron to join the home run party, blasting a two run home run to right field.
"I knew he (Baez) throws fast and he threw me two fastballs early in the count," Austin said of the at bat when he homered. "That allowed me to get my timing down and after I looked up and saw 86 on the breaking ball, I was ready for the fastball on the next pitch."
With plenty of cushion, Spencer Adams worked in and out of trouble, pitching six innings while surrendering eight hits, but just one unearned run and striking out four. The only run allowed came in the third inning, when a ball hit by Justin O'Conner scooted past RF Jeff Gelalich, which allowed the speedy Braxton Lee to score.
The Barons would tack on two more in the eighth on an Eddy Alvarez RBI triple and a Jake Peter sac fly. The 10 runs and three home runs from the Barons offense marked season highs.
Adams (1-4, 2.93) got the victory for the Barons, while Wood (1-2, 5.02) gave up seven earned runs in 4.2 innings pitched to take the loss. Connor Walsh pitched a scoreless seventh and eighth inning, but the Biscuits would score five in the ninth to cut the lead to 10-6 before Ian Hamilton finally shut the door to secure the victory.
The Barons will be back in action on Sunday afternoon at Riverwalk Stadium in Montgomery. First pitch is scheduled for 2:05 p.m. CT and it will be a Kopech Day as RHP Michael Kopech (1-1, 2.50) will get the ball for Birmingham, while righty Jose Mujica (0-1, 1.42) will be on the mound for the Biscuits. Curt Bloom will bring you all the action on WERC 105.5 FM and the iHeart Radio app, beginning with the Coca-Cola Pregame Show beginning at 1:55 p.m. CT.
