Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release
San Angelo, TX - Joel Gonzalez broke up a no-hit bid by an opposing pitcher for the fourth time this season, hitting an RBI-double against Logan Williamson (10-4) in the sixth to give the Harlingen WhiteWings (19-56) their only hit in a 4-2 loss to the San Angelo Colts (47-27) tonight at Foster Field.
Williamson faced the minimum 15 hitters through five innings. The only base runner was Matt Lawman, who started the game by hitting a grounder to second. Joe Rhomberg threw the ball wide of first for an error. One out later, though, Amadeo Zazueta grounded into a double play to erase Lawman.
That was it until the sixth. Down 3-0, Carl Johnson led off with a four-pitch walk and stole second. Gonzalez then doubled down the line to drive in Johnson. A wild pitch moved Gonzalez to third and Greg Sillivent followed with a walk. Lawman grounded into a double play to get Gonzalez home, making it 3-2.
Ryan Fox drew a one-out walk against Williamson in the seventh, the only other base runner against him. Williamson struck out eight in seven innings of work.
The Colts scored against Bryan Herrera (0-4) right away. With one out in the first, Tyrone Pendergrass singled and stole second. Jose Torres followed with an RBI-double. One out later, Aaron Cone hit an RBI-double to make it 2-0.
Tyrone Pendergrass hit his second home run of the season in the fifth to make it 3-0.
Andres Rodriguez led off the eighth with his 18th home run of the season to knock out Herrera, making it 4-2.
Robert Romero pitched a perfect ninth for his first save.
The WhiteWings and Colts play the second of three tomorrow night at 7:05. Right-hander Brock Nehls (0-2) will face left-hander Alex Merricks (3-0).
