Gonzalez and Martin Lift 'Winders in Vegas

Edgar Gonzalez threw seven strong innings and Billy Martin drove in three runs Friday as Tucson defeated Las Vegas 5-2 at Cashman Field.

Tucson improved to 7-3 against Las Vegas winning for the fifth straight game.. The Sidewinders also evened the all time series at 173 games apiece. Tucson also won for the 15th time in the last 20 games to move to within one game of .500.

Gonzalez allowed just five hits and one run in seven innings while earning his sixth win of the year.

Matt Mantei completed his rehab for the Sidewinders throwing two innings, allowing one run. After throwing just seven pitches in the eighth inning Mantei went back out for the ninth and surrendered a lead off home run to Chad Hermanson. Mantei allowed two hits, one run, struck out one and threw 17 pitches, 13 for strikes.

Tucson put a pair of runs on the board in the top of the first against Las Vegas starter Andrew Lorraine. Shea Hillenbrand started the scoring with a single to right plating Luis Terrero who had walked. Martin followed with a sacrifice fly.

Martin increased Tucson's lead to 3-0 in the third inning when he singled in Danny Ramirez. Martin produced another run batted in during the top of the seventh. His two-out double scored Ramirez again. Brad Cresse followed with an RBI single to increase the Sidewinders advantage to 5-0.

Rick Bell produced the only Las Vegas run when he homered leading off the bottom seventh against Gonzalez.

Ramirez led the team with three hits. Cresse, Martin and Jhonny Carvajal each collected two hits. Shea Hillenbrand finished 2-5 with the one RBI in his second rehab game with Tucson.

The Sidewinders improved to 39-40. Tucson and Las Vegas will meet again Saturday night (7:10 p.m.) at Cashman Field. Lance Cormier (1-0 2.57) will start for the Sidewinders against the 51's Masao Kida (1-2 5.92).
