Frederick Keys News Release

FREDERICK, MD - On Friday night, the Baltimore Orioles announced the promotions of starting pitcher Brian Gonzalez and relief pitcher Branden Kline to the Double-A Bowie Baysox. For Kline, it is a return to the Double-A ranks, while it marks Gonzalez's first promotion to the Eastern League. Earlier this season, Alejandro Juvier (Norfolk) and Lucas Humpal (Bowie) received call-ups.

Gonzalez, 22, moves up to Bowie after going 2-2 with a 3.18 ERA in seven starts. Over 39.2 innings, gave up 17 runs (14 earned) on 31 hits to go with 18 walks and 33 strikeouts. Opponents were hitting .214 against Gonzalez.

Four out of the Floridian's seven starts were quality outings, with the highlight coming on May 8 against Lynchburg. Firing off seven hitless innings to go with seven strikeouts, Gonzalez and Elvis Araujo combined to carry a no-hitter into the ninth before Conner Capel broke it up.

Selected by Baltimore in the third round of the 2014 draft out of Archbishop McCarthy (FL) High School, Gonzalez was the Orioles first selection in the draft that year.

Kline, 26, went 1-0 with a 1.31 ERA in 12 appearances while also going 2-for-2 in save opportunities. Over 20.2 frames, the Frederick, MD native gave up six runs (three earned) on 20 hits to go with three walks and 23 strikeouts. Opponents were hitting .253 against him.

After not pitching in any regular season games since the 2015 season, Kline turned in an excellent April, tallying a 0.82 ERA (11 IP/1ER). Opposing hitters went a collective 6-for-37 against Kline.

A graduate of Thomas Johnson (MD) High School in Frederick, 2018 marked Kline's first return to the Keys since 2014, when the right-hander went 8-6 with a 3.84 ERA in 23 starts. Kline missed the 2016-17 campaigns due to injury. Originally, Kline was a second round in 2012 out of the University of Virginia.

In a variety of corresponding moves, the Keys receive three new pitchers from the Low-A Delmarva Shorebirds. Right-hander Michael Baumann takes Gonzalez's spot in the rotation. In seven starts, Baumann went 5-0 with a 1.42 ERA. In 38 innings he struck out 47 and limited opponents to a .180 average. At the time of his departure, Baumann was tied for the South Atlantic League lead in wins, fourth in opponent batting average and fifth in ERA.

Left-handed relievers Travis Seabrooke and Zach Muckenhirn also join the Keys pitching staff. In 11 relief appearances, Seabrooke went 1-1 (3-for-5 in save appearances) with a 3.29 ERA. Opponents batted .260 against him. Muckenhirn made 12 relief outings, going 1-0 (3-for-3 save tries) with a 2.12 ERA. Over 17 frames, he struck out 27 and limited opposing hitters to a .172 average.

Keys reliever Francisco Jimenez was transferred to Aberdeen.

After a rain out on Friday, the Keys begin a three-game series with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans on Saturday night at Nymeo Field. Right-hander Cristian Alvarado (4-3, 4.28) starts for the Keys and will be opposed by Myrtle Beach right-hander Matt Swarmer (3-2, 2.51).

It is Family Fitness Weekend sponsored by Premiere Dental Arts, while Saturday is Hail to the Redskins Night. Former Redskins Santana Moss and Gary Clark will be on hand to sign autographs from 5-7 presented by PMSI. There will also be a fireworks super show courtesy of MDOT and Planet Fitness.
