Errors Prove Costly in Keys Loss to Pelicans

FREDERICK, MD - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans (17-24) scored three times in the seventh inning to come from behind and defeat the Frederick Keys (16-24) 4-3 on Saturday night. The Keys made two errors in the frame that led to two unearned runs.

Frederick scored two times in the first inning to take an early lead. Ryan McKenna and Cole Billingsley each singled. Preston Palmeiro brought in McKenna with an RBI single, and Billingsley scored when Wilson Garcia grounded into a double play.

In the third, the Keys extended their lead with one swing. Billingsley hit a home run to right field to make it 3-0. It was his third home run of the year, all coming at Nymeo Field.

The score remained 3-0 until the fifth. Tyler Alamo collected a one out single, and advanced to third on a single by Daniel Spingola. That is when Middletown, MD native Connor Myers drove in Alamo with a single to make it 3-1 Keys.

The big inning for Myrtle Beach came in the seventh, where they scored three runs with only one of them earned. The inning began when Alamo reached on a Jomar Reyes error. Kevonte Mitchell then launched a two-run home run to tie the game at three. Two batters later, Myers hit a single, and Aramis Ademan reached on an error by Keys pitcher Tyler Erwin. Myers would later score on a wild pitch to make it a 4-3 game.

Cristian Alvarado delivered his fourth quality start of the year. The right-hander earned a no decision, allowing three runs (two earned) over six innings while striking out six. Erwin (0-2) was tagged with the loss. He allowed an unearned run over 0.2 innings. Matt Swarmer (4-2) earned the win for Myrtle Beach, tossing seven innings of three-run baseball.

The Keys and Pelicans play a doubleheader on Sunday. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. with game two to follow. Michael Baumann (0-0, --) will make his first Keys start in game one. He will be opposed by right-hander Keegan Thompson (1-2, 3.47). The Keys have not announced their game two starter, and the Pelicans will start left-hander Jose Paulino (0-5, 8.64). The Frederick Keys are the Advanced-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, and play their home games at Nymeo Field at Harry Grove Stadium. In 2017, the Keys received the Esurance Home Field Advantage Award for Carolina League for the second straight season, after leading the circuit in highest percentage of attendance based on ballpark capacity.
