Indianapolis Indians News Release
INDIANAPOLIS - Jason Martin had two of the Indians' seven hits in a 2-0 loss to the Red Wings on Monday night at Victory Field. Rochester starter Stephen Gonsalves kept the Tribe off balance through seven shutout innings, scattering five hits with four strikeouts.
The Red Wings (45-53) snapped a seven-game losing streak behind their ace. Gonsalves (W, 7-3) took control after his offense scored one in the first on a Miguel Sano single to right-center. The 24-year-old faced four over the minimum and escaped jams in the fourth and fifth en route to his third straight win.
The Indians (52-47) threatened in the fourth when Jose Osuna singled and stole second, but Gonsalves struck out both Kevin Kramer and Christopher Bostick to keep Indy off the board. Martin then opened the fifth with a triple to right-center but was caught too far off third base on a grounder to third by Jackson Williams, resulting in a 5-2 fielder's choice.
The Tribe put two runners on in the eighth against D.J. Baxendale, but Adam Frazier flied out to left and Austin Meadows grounded back to the mound.
Osuna nearly erased Rochester's bid at its ninth shutout when he greeted closer Alan Busenitz with a deep drive to the wall in left. LaMonte Wade caught the ball up against the fence, however, and Busenitz (S, 5) recorded two strikeouts to end the ballgame.
Brandon Waddell (L, 4-5) pitched admirably for the Tribe, throwing six innings of one-run ball. He has posted a 1.35 ERA (3 ER/20.0 IP) over his last three home starts.
The shutout loss was Indy's seventh of the season and its first since June 11 against Toledo.
The Tribe went 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position. Rochester didn't fare much better in those situations, going 2-for-14.
Indy turned a season-high four double plays defensively.
The Indians and Red Wings continue their three-game series on Wednesday night, with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. EDT. Tribe righty J.T. Brubaker (5-3, 3.98) will start against right-hander Kohl Stewart (0-2, 4.70).
