MOBILE, Ala. - On Wednesday, former BayBears first baseman Paul Goldschmidt was named the 2011 USA Today Minor League Player of the Year for his incredible numbers with the BayBears during most of the 2011 season.

At the time of his promotion to the major leagues, Goldschmidt was leading all of minor leaguers with 30 home runs and 94 RBI. He is still the home run and RBI leader in the Southern League despite being away from the BayBears for a month. He also remains at the head of the on-base percentage, slugging percentage and base on balls lists for the Southern League.

Goldschmidt, 23, is the second BayBear to ever win the honor which has been given annually since 1988. Goldschmidt's Diamondbacks teammate, Justin Upton, was the first to receive the award in 2007. Past winners also include Josh Beckett, Jose Reyes, Prince Fielder and Josh Hamilton.

Goldschmidt batted .306 for the BayBears and has hit at a .269 clip since joining the D-backs. He's already cranked five big league homers with his first coming off two-time Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum in San Francisco.

The Second Half South Division BayBears begin their final regular season series on Thursday against the Huntsville Stars from Joe Davis Stadium at 6:43 p.m. The BayBears return to Hank Aaron Stadium on Saturday, September 10 for game three of the South Division Championship Series against the Birmingham Barons at 7:05 p.m. There will be a fireworks show after the ballgame and a 9/11 tribute before the contest. For tickets, which start at $5 for kids and $7 for adults, please call (251) 479-BEAR or visit www.mobilebaybears.com. You can also follow the BayBears all season long on Facebook and Twitter.
