Goldeyes Swept by Capitales
July 26, 2012 - American Association (AA)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
The Winnipeg Goldeyes simply couldn't solve the mystery of the Quebec Capitales pitching staff.
Thursday afternoon at Shaw Park, the visiting Capitales got another great start, this time from Canadian righthander Jeff Duda, as the Caps beat the Winnipeg Goldeyes 5-0 to sweep Winnipeg in a three-game series.
With the loss, the Goldeyes fell for the third straight time, watched their record drop to 37-27 and fell further behind first-place Fargo-Moorhead in the American Association's North Division. The Goldeyes never had the lead at any time during the series.
Duda, meanwhile, followed Karl Gelinas and John Mariotti as the third straight Capitales starter to dominate Winnipeg.
There was never a time during his seven innings of work on Thursday when Duda wasn't in control. He struck out eight Goldeyes over the first four innings and finished with nine Ks. He allowed no runs on six scattered hits, had no walks and three 95 pitches, 66 for strikes.
Quebec, which won all three games in the series by scores of 6-2, 9-3 and 5-0, opened the scoring in the first inning off Goldeyes starter Chris Salamida. Jonathan Malo singled, Sebastien Boucher was safe on an infield hit and Rene Leveret drove home the game's first run with a single.
Quebec made it 2-0 in the fourth on back-to-back doubles by Leveret and Josue Pelley and then they blew it open with three runs in the seventh as Boucher and Leveret each singled home runs and Boucher scored on an error by Goldeyes rightfielder Josh Mazzola.
Chris Roberson was the only Goldeyes batter to have a multi-hit game on Thursday. He had a double and a triple, but was stranded twice on third base.
Duda (10-0, 2.17 ERA) got the win for the Capitales while Salamida (2-5, 4.63 ERA) suffered the loss for the Goldeyes.
While the Capitales will now head off to St. Paul, the Goldeyes will open a three-game series with the Sioux Falls Fighting Pheasants at Shaw Park. Game 1 on Friday night begins at 7:05 and can be heard live on TSN 1290 with Paul Edmonds calling the play-by-play.
