Errors Costly in Pheasants Loss to Fargo

Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

Fargo, N.D. - Ridge Carpenter had a career day with two home runs for the Sioux Falls Pheasants, but two defensive errors opened the door for a late-inning rally and an 8-4 loss to the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks on Thursday afternoon.

The RedHawks (41-23) completed a three-game sweep of the Pheasants, who fell to 7-17 in July.

The Pheasants (29-35) used three home runs to right field to erase a 4-0 deficit. Trevor Lawhorn hit his sixth long ball of the year to follow up Cristian Guerrero's leadoff double in the sixth inning. Carpenter's solo shot off the foul pole came two batters later to cut the lead to 4-3.

In the eighth inning, Carpenter's second home run tied the game 4-4. Carpenter, a rookie acquired from Winnipeg earlier this week, had not homered this season. He now has three career home runs and finished 2-for-4.

Pheasants reliever Jack Van Leur (3-1) retired the first two RedHawks batters in the eighth and gave way to Kyle Mertins after a two-out walk. Cesar Nicolas' fielding error at third base and Zach Penprase's infield single loaded the bases for Ryan Stovall, who blooped a two-run double to right field for a 6-4 advantage.

Fargo-Moorhead scored two more runs on Eric Campbell's infield single and subsequent throwing error by Cory Morales.

Al Quintana, Guerrero and Carpenter each had two-hit games for the Pheasants.

Van Leur (3-1) suffered his first loss despite not allowing a hit in 1 2/3 innings in relief of starter Pete Gehle.

Joe Harris (1-0) gave up Carpenter's second home run and pitched only one-third of an inning, but he collected the win.

Sioux Falls never led in the three-game series and has lost five straight games.

The Pheasants begin a three-game series with the Winnipeg Goldeyes at 7 p.m. on Friday, July 27, in Winnipeg. The Goldeyes come off a sweep at the hands of the Quebec Capitales. Friday's game will be broadcast on Sioux Falls Sports Radio 1230-AM KWSN and www.kwsn.com.
