Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

The league-leading Winnipeg Goldeyes swept the Gary SouthShore RailCats this afternoon for the second time this season, doing so 7-4 today before a crowd of 5,853 at Canwest Park. With the win, the Goldeyes stretched their lead over Gary atop the Northern League standings to three games.

Gary opened the scoring off Mark Michael. Steve Haake led off with his team-leading fourth triple and scored on a Jeff Beachum ground out. Winnipeg responded in the third off Garret Holleran. Adam Frost singled to lead it off and stole his team-leading 15th base. Cory Patton walked and Josh Asanovich was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Juan Diaz, who tattooed the first pitch he saw deep to left for his 13th home run and second grand slam in the last 10 days.

The visitors got one back in the fifth on a solo home run from Rob Marconi and another in the sixth. Eric McNamee singled and stole second. After striking out the next two hitters, Michael walked Beachum before Cristian Guerrero singled to score McNamee. But the Goldeyes came right back. Brent Metheny singled with one out, stole second and scored on a Dee Brown single.

With Holleran in the showers, Winnipeg made it 7-3 in the seventh off Kyle Heyne, who hit Patton to start the inning. Asanovich sacrificed him to second, from where he scored on Diaz's second dinger of the day. Gary concluded the scoring in the eighth off Derek Feldkamp. Jay Pecci hit a half-swing double to lead it off, moved up on a Haake fly out and scored on a sacrifice fly by Beachum.

Michael (2-2) got the win, allowing three runs on four hits in six innings, walking four and fanning three. Holleran (1-2) took the loss, allowing five runs on six hits in six innings, fanning two and walking one. Chris Homer tossed a one-two-three ninth for his second save.

This series concluded today. Off to Kansas City for five games beginning Tuesday before heading to Schaumburg for three games, the Goldeyes return home on Tuesday, August 4 when they welcome Joliet to open a six-game homestand.
