Flyers rally falls short

Schaumburg Flyers News Release

FARGO, ND - A ninth inning Flyers rally fell short Sunday at Newman Outdoor Field as Fargo topped Schaumburg 7-5 in the series rubber match.

The Flyers struck first in the fourth with Vince Harrison and Victor Ferrante leading off the frame with back-to-back singles off Fargo starter Broc Coffman. Richard Mercado then delivered the first of his three doubles on the day, scoring Harrison. Craig Maddox would score Ferrante on a bounce out to second to put the Flyers ahead 2-0. Those two fourth-inning runs were the only the Flyers would score until the ninth.

The RedHawks answered right back in the bottom half of the inning with Nic Jackson scoring on a Randall Simon sacrifice fly and Jeremiah Piepkorn scoring on a Ruben Salazar single to tie the game at two. It was Salazar's first hit of the 09 campaign, as last season's batting champ has been battling passport issues in his native Venezuela.

A Mike Coles single an inning later plated Alan Rick to give the RedHawks their first lead of the day at 3-2. Simon homered in the sixth inning to make it 4-2 RedHawks, and drove in Jackson with a single in the seventh to put Fargo ahead 5-2.

Coles and Zach Penprase both scored in the eighth on singles by Jackson and Piepkorn off Cephas Howard to balloon the RedHawks advantage to 7-2.

Those runs would loom large in the ninth. Ferrante homered on the first pitch of the frame to cut it to 7-3, and after Mercado doubled with one out, Jose Valdez drilled a two-run homer to make it 7-5. TJ Wilson would take strike three called to end the game.

Simon finished 3-4 with three RBI, a triple short of the cycle. Jackson went 3-5, scoring twice for the RedHawks. Mercado led the way for the Flyers, finishing 3-4. Ferrante was the only other Flyer with a multi-hit game, going 2-4.

Ed Almonte (4-8) took the loss for the Flyers, allowing four runs on seven hits over five innings. Coffman (7-4) picked up the win in his first start since a stint on the DL, allowing two runs on four hits through five.

Tomorrow night is the Battle of the Sexes as the Flyers take on the Chicago Bandits at Alexian Field at 7:05. The Flyers will resume Northern League action on Tuesday with a doubleheader against Fargo beginning at 5:15. RHP Tom Lyons (2-4, 5.31) will throw game one for Schaumburg against Fargo's RHP Garry Bakker (4-3, 5.45). In game two, LHP Carmen Pignatiello (4-7, 6.12) opposes the RedHawks' RHP Nick Fellman (2-5, 5.18).
