Goldeyes Move into First Place
July 24, 2009 - Northern League (NL)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
The Winnipeg Goldeyes moved into sole possession of first place in the Northern League tonight with a 9-3 win over the Gary SouthShore RailCats before a crowd of 5,754 at Canwest Park.
Gary opened the scoring off Ace Walker in the second. Steve Haake found himself standing at second after leading off with a fly ball to centre that Cory Patton dropped. Jordan Czarniecki followed with a single and it was 1-0. Czarniecki moved up to second on a Mike Rohde ground out and scored on a two-out single by Brett Wallace. Winnipeg got one back in the bottom of the inning off Chris Jones on a lead-off home run by Dee Brown, but Mike Massaro replied for the RailCats to start the third with a lead-off home run of his own.
The hosts came right back again. Josh Asanovich singled to start the inning and went to third on a Kevin West single. Brent Metheny doubled to score Asanovich and move West to third, from where he scored on a Dee Brown sacrifice fly to tie it. Metheny tagged up, advanced to third and scored shortly after when he stole home. Things stayed that way until the seventh.
With Tristan Facer in for Jones, Jeff DeSmidt drew a one-out walk and was replaced by pinch-runner Dustin Richardson. Patton doubled to put two men in scoring position and that was it for Facer. Eddie De La Cruz came in and promptly walked Asanovich to load the bases for Juan Diaz, whose single to right scored Richardson and Patton to make it 6-3. Asanovich went to third on the play and scored on a sacrifice fly by West. Metheny followed with an absolute bomb to right and it was 9-3.
Walker (7-3) was brilliant in going the distance for his league-leading third complete game, allowing all three runs (one earned) on six hits with one walk and no strikeouts. Jones (4-3) took the loss after getting stung for four runs on five hits in six innings, walking two and fanning four.
