July 24, 2009 - Northern League (NL)
Joliet JackHammers News Release

JOLIET-LF Brad Correll (2-3) hit a two-run single in the 7th inning to snap a 2-2 tie and SS Kevin Rios (2-5) tied the Northern League's longest hitting streak of the season at 23 games to help lead the Joliet JackHammers (24-38) to a 5-3 win over the Kansas City T-Bones (26-34) before 4,345 fans at Silver Cross Field on Friday night.

The T-Bones started the scoring with a single run in the 4th inning against Joliet RHP Nate Sevier. 2B Neb Brown (2-4) smacked a solo home run over the right field wall for a 1-0 T-Bones lead.

The JackHammers tied the game with a single run in the 4th inning. CF Adam Klein (1-4) led off the inning with a single and stole second base. He advanced to third base on a throwing error by Kansas City catcher Ryan Fox and scored on a single by Correll for a 1-1 tied score.

Joliet took a 2-1 lead in the 6th inning thanks to some aggressive base running by Correll. He worked a one-out walk against Kansas City starter Ryan Knippschild (3-3) and moved to second base on a wild pitch. A groundout by DH Kyle Nichols (0-2) moved Correll to third base. The Joliet LF decided to keep running and got caught in a rundown. He eventually drew an errant throw by Fox to score from third base and give the JackHammers a 2-1 lead.

Kansas City tied the game in the 7th inning on a solo home run by SS Mark Minicozzi (1-3).

Sevier lasted six and one-thirds innings and allowed two runs on four hits in a no-decision.

The JackHammers took the lead for good in the 7th inning. C Tug Gillingham (3-3) hit a one-out single and moved to second base on a single by Rios. The base-hit tied the Northern League's longest hitting streak of 2009. Klein worked a walk to load the bases.

Correll followed with a two-run single to plate both Gillingham and Rios. After a walk to Nichols re-loaded the bases, new RF Joe Gaetti (0-2) hit a sacrifice fly to score Klein for a 5-2 Joliet.

LHP Ryan Paul (3-3) pitched two-thirds of an inning to get the win. RHP Chad Blackwell logged two scoreless innings to get his fourth save of the season.

Loose Gravel: Joliet placed C Phil Avlas and IF Danny Cox on the disabled list before the game. The JackHammers also activated Gillingham from the disabled list and signed OF Joe Gaetti to a contract. Gaetti, who most recently played for AA Montgomery in the Tampa Bay organization, comes to the JackHammers with an impressive baseball pedigree.

The son of former Minnesota Twin Gary Gaetti, he is a lifetime 284 hitter. A 12th round selection by Colorado in the 2003 draft, Gaetti has played at AAA for parts of the last two seasons: (Colorado Springs, 2007, AAA Colorado) and (Sacramento, 2008, AAA Oakland).

Loose Gravel: Dee Brown of the Winnipeg Goldeyes had a 23-game hitting streak lasting from June 5-July 3. Rios started his hitting streak on June 27.
