Schaumburg Flyers News Release
FARGO, ND - Victor Ferrante smacked a two-run homer in the eighth inning to give the Flyers a 5-4 win over Fargo-Moorhead in front of a sellout crowd of 4,560 Friday night at Newman Outdoor Field.
The RedHawks got on the board in the first inning off Flyers starter Dustin Glant. Zach Penprase stole second after knocking a one-out single, and Nic Jackson drove him in with a single to center.
Schaumburg took advantage of Fargo mistakes to tie the game at one in the third. Travis Brown singled with one out and advanced to second when Mike Coles misplayed the ball in right field. After moving to third on a wild pitch, Brown scored when Tony Mansolino reached on an error by the shortstop Penprase.
The Flyers took their first lead an inning later, getting it done with two outs. After Craig Maddox coaxed a full-count walk, Jeff Dunbar singled to extend the inning for Richard Mercado. Mercado then delivered his first hit of the season with runners in scoring position and two outs, scoring Maddox to put Schaumburg up 2-1.
Brown and Mansolino led off the fifth with back-to-back singles, sending Brown to third. Jose Valdez then lifted a sacrifice fly to center to make it 3-1.
The RedHawks would tie the game in the bottom half of the inning with Coles driving a leadoff homer to left, and Penprase scoring on a Jeremiah Piepkorn sacrifice fly after doubling and moving to third on a passed ball.
Fargo retook the lead in the seventh. Penprase singled with one out, stole second, took third when Mercado's throw went into center, and scored on a Jackson sacrifice fly to make it 4-3 RedHawks.
Ferrante's game-winner in the eighth followed a leadoff single from Vince Harrison.
Harrison and Brown each had two hits for the Flyers, with Brown scoring twice. Penprase led the way for the RedHawks, scoring three times while going 3-4.
Both starters took no decisions. Fargo starter Matt Mossey six hits over six innings, allowing three runs, two earned. Glant allowed three runs on seven hits over six innings.
Josh Giles (2-0) picked up the win against his former team, allowing one run on one hit in two innings of relief. Elvys Quezada (4-2) takes the loss, giving up the Ferrante homer during his two innings of relief. Cephas Howard notched his third save, executing a one-two-three ninth.
LHP Alain Quijano (3-2, 4.93) throws for the Flyers tomorrow, opposed by LHP Jeff Icenogle, who will be making his RedHawks debut.
