Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks News Release
FARGO, N.D. - The Schaumburg Flyers got a two-run home run from RF Victor Ferrante in the top of the eighth inning and eked-out a 5-4 victory over the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks in front of 4,560 fans at Newman Outdoor Field Friday night.
In the RedHawks first inning, SS Zach Penprase singled up-the-middle and swiped second for his 26th stolen base of the season. CF Nic Jackson singled him home to open the scoring in the first. In the third, the Flyers benefited from two booted balls to tie it at one-all before RedHawks starter RHP Matt Mossey induced the inning ending 3-6-3 double play.
DH Craig Maddox drew a two-out walk and the Flyers staked a one-run lead on a pair of singles from LF Jeff Dunbar and C Richard Mercado. SS Travis Brown singled through the left-hole and reached third on a hit-and-run single by 1B Tony Mansolino. With runners in scoring position, 2B Jose Valdez lifted a sac fly to dead-center to give the Flyers a 3-1 lead.
In the fifth, the RedHawks crept within one on a solo shot by RF Mike Coles. SS Zach Penprase doubled off-the-wall and reached third on a wild pitch. With one out and runners at the corners, RF Jeremiah Piepkorn lifted a sac fly to left to tie the game at three-all.
Penprase legged out a bunt-single and reached third on a passed ball and a throwing error by Flyers C Richard Mercado. With the go-ahead run 90 feet away, CF Nic Jackson lifted an opposite field sac fly to plate Penprase and give the RedHawks a 4-3 lead. But Ferrante spoiled the RedHawks lead with an eighth inning two-run big fly to make it 5-4 Flyers.
RedHawks starter RHP Matt Mossey pitched 6.0 innings and gave-up three runs (two earned) and fanned three for the no-decision. RedHawks reliever RHP Elvys Quezada (4-2) suffers his second loss of the season. Flyers reliever RHP Joshua Giles (2-0) pitched 2.0 innings and gave-up one run (unearned) for his second win of the season. Flyers closer RHP Cephas Howard pitched a 1-2-3 ninth-inning for his third save of the season.
