Goldeyes Capture Ninth Straight Win

SIOUX FALLS, SD - The Winnipeg Goldeyes (43-29) beat the Sioux Falls Canaries 12-8 at Sioux Falls Stadium on Monday night.
The Goldeyes have won nine games in a row, which currently stands as the fourth longest winning streak in franchise history. The team record is 11 set in 2014. Winnipeg won 10 straight in both 2004 and 2009.
"The guys were just playing hard, and they're having fun coming to the ballpark every day," said Goldeyes' hitting coach Tom Vaeth . "It's fun in that clubhouse. The home run from Tanabe was big for us. Those at-bats late in the game. We took some walks when we needed to. Tanabe made that pickoff in the eighth. That was huge for us."
After falling behind 1-0 in the bottom of the first on a two-out, RBI double from David Bergin, the Goldeyes immediately responded with five runs in the top of the second. Reggie Abercrombie came back from an 0-2 count to draw a 10-pitch leadoff walk. Abercrombie took second on Jacob Rogers' line drive single to left, and scored the tying run two batters later on Casio Grider's RBI double to left-centre. An error by Canaries' third baseman BJ Guinn brought in Rogers to give the Goldeyes a 2-1 lead. A second error by Guinn with Maikol Gonzalez at the plate plated Grider with Winnipeg's third run. Josh Romanski pulled an RBI double down the right field line that drove in Carlton Tanabe . Willie Cabrera made it 5-1 with an RBI single through the left side.
Goldeyes' starter Mikey O'Brien (8-4) made the lead stand over six innings. O'Brien allowed four earned runs on six hits. O'Brien walked three and struck out three. With runners on first and second and one out in the third, O'Brien induced an inning-ending double play from Bergin.
"Mikey was good tonight," said Vaeth. "He came out and put some zeroes on the board. We got some good at-bats, good hits, and we came back and added five to the good side. We just battled, and it snowballed from there."
Tanabe led off the next half inning with a solo home run to left that stretched the Goldeyes' lead to 6-1. Doubles from Rogers and David Rohm in the fifth made it 7-1.
Cameron Monger hit a two-out, three-run home run to left in the bottom of the sixth to cut the Goldeyes' lead to 7-4.
In the top of the eighth, Ridge Hoopii-Haslam drew a leadoff walk, took second on Tanabe's groundball to shortstop, and scored Winnipeg's eighth run when Gonzalez singled to centre off the glove of second baseman Darwin Perez. Two batters later, Cabrera poked a line drive single to right to bring in Gonzalez.
The Canaries pulled within one run with a four-run bottom of the eighth. Guinn lined a three-run double to right that scored Blake Schmit, Bergin, and Monger. After Aaron Owen was hit by a pitch, Michael Pair lifted a pinch-hit single to left that scored Guinn to make it 9-8. Ethan Chapman fouled out to Rogers at first for the second out of the inning. Eric Eadington then relieved Kyle Anderson and ended the inning when Tanabe picked off Pair at first.
The Goldeyes re-extended the lead with three runs in the top of the ninth with the help of five walks. Tanabe and Romanski drew bases loaded free passes, while Hoopii-Haslam came home on a wild pitch from Canaries' reliever Josh Ferrell.
Eadington worked a perfect bottom of the ninth to convert the four-out save.
"Eadington is pitching with a lot of confidence," said Vaeth. "You can tell from his body language. He's attacking hitters and going out there and being aggressive."
Kris Regas (4-6) started for Sioux Falls and took the loss, allowing seven runs, four earned, on eight hits in four and two-thirds innings. Regas walked three and struck out two.
Brandon Shimo worked a scoreless bottom of the seventh in relief of O'Brien.
